Why? That's what it is--I have one too--it's an "FJ"40
Well I took it on a 40 mileish drive there is a chatter coming from where the clutch and flywheel would be its also difficult to shift. When i put light pressure on clutch the chatter gets quite....Are the any adjustments i can make to the the clutch....or any ideas what that damn noise is the engine is rebuilt and runs like a champ and at a rock solid 160° degrees.
This would be only a speculation but it sounds like the clutch might have been adjusted to tight when the engine rebuild/reinstall took place...A lot of times I see people have the throwout bearing riding on the pressure plate which will cause the bearing, pressure plate and clutch disc to wear out prematurely. That bearing is not designed to be constantly spinning thus wearing it out and since it is constant contact with the pressure plate it acts as if you are riding the clutch all the time. The noise you're hearing is most likely the throwout bearing but combine that with hard to shift and it sounds like it's time for a clutch job. HTH

My FJ as I call it earned those letters at least 25 years before the Cruisers even came out as I call them.
