This is a good route to take but don't go cheap unknowen ebay quality. Get a genuine Melett CHRA like these.

That's just an example of what you need for quality. Obviously you would find somewhere in your own country to purchase from. You missed the point of my post

I meant by the time I got one. Not that one shipped. A rebuild is only a few hundred more. And when you include my time spent tearing the turbo down, a rebuild makes sense

No way you'd get a rebuild you could trust done in that price range in Aus.
Last time I inquired about a rebuild, (15-ish yrs ago) all prices i got were fairly well in excess of $1000, that's with me dropping the turbo to the shop
Exactly. Plus you'd be without a car for how ever long the shop takes to rebuild it. Which could be weeks! At least you can swap the CHRA over and get it back on the road in a day.
Just for a data point, I put a sub-$200 Chinese CHRA in the turbo I used on my VW-powered LandCruiser, it has been going strong for over 50k km so far and regularly makes 20-23psi and sees temps in the 1200-1400ºF range. I've even seen 1600ºF+ a couple of times.
The ebay seller above GT Turbo is based in California, has been on ebay since 2011 and has a sold 77000 items with a 97.3% positive feedback.
