03 LX470 Sub/ Stereo Question

Hi All,
I am new to this forum but have been around in the backround. I've checked all around but had no luck. I've even been to the Lexus forums and was reffered back here due to the great tech's that help out around this website. Heres my problem...

I have a 2003 LX470 w/ the ML stereo. Well the subwoofer started rattling and it got worse so i assumed it was blown. A good reason/ excuse to replace it. I got a free old 10 inch polk audio sub and took out the stock sub, ran wires to the tailgate of the trunk so I could replace the sub at my leisure and put in the polk audio sub. Well, when the bass is up to high or the volume (basically when a hard bass hits) the stereo cuts out. The CD still plays through, but the sound itself cuts out and nothing else. So I replaced it with 2 10 inch orion subs in a banpass box and its even more sensitive with bass since its a louder bass hit. I have no idea what it is or why its doing this but it sounds really good until you turn it up? Any suggestions or has anyone ran into this issue before? Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks all!

EWOK363-

You want the 100-Series section. That section applies to 98-07 Cruisers.

This section applies to 91-97 Cruisers.

Rick-

Any progress?

I wanted mine a little more stealth but it makes the rear tailgate REALLY heavy with two JL 10w6's

LKA1988, sorry about that, I just did a search and this popped up not even realizing it was in a completely wrong section so I just replied because it seemed like a similar subject. I'll go re-post in the 100 series section now that I know! Thanks.

Wait, are you running these larger subs off the factory HU/Amp or are you using an aftermarket external amp

It is running off of the stock amp. My buddy did it in his 2002 LX with no problems but I'm unsure if its the same stereo set up or not? Both of ours are stock with just the added woofers onto the stock amps.

At what impedance are you running the subs at?

I'm not sure what kinda amp the 100's have, but if it's anything like the factory 80 series amp, you're gunna have issues running a single 10", let alone two :o

Do you know if that would be a power issue with the amp? Because i've done several installs in the past, all aftermarket, and the only time I run into this particular problem is when the battery is almost dead and I need to start the car up to keep it charged. I have limited experience with stock systems but have replaced several sub-woofers in other Lexus' with only using the stock amps and had no problems? Thanks for the info.

i would make it like really protected or else it would get damages by sitting on it... etc

Ok, I've been thinking about adding a basic sub to my 80

I don't need anything that will blow out my eardrums (I've long outgrown my SPL days), just a basic budget based add-on that will give a little kick when watching movies :)

The kids actually prefer watching in the truck rather than the plasmas at home lol

I've seen LDD's sub enclosure and as much as I like the stealthyness, I don't like that fact that I have to chop the rear pocket :o

That's where I plan on mounting my amp anyways

Anyhoo, it's gunna be a budget build, so here's what I have listed so far...

Kicker ZX300.1 amp with remote sub controller: $65

Elemental Design SQ10 slimline 2ohm sub: $70

Enclosure Built to specs using MDF or HDF: $???

Now the idea for the sub enclosure is to build a slimline downfiring box ported towards the rear hatch kinda like this, but much thinner (whatever is appropriate for the single sub)

This way I won't have to worry about the sub getting damaged from junk I throw back there

I want it just as wide, but built for a single sub on one side, leaving the other side empty for storage space (tools, recovery equipment, etc.) with a hinged top door

Like this:

Debating whether to carpet it to match the interior carpet or use tan vinyl to match the leather seats

I want it to look like part of the vehicle (almost OEM), but still be able to remove it easily if I need to

I'm still open to suggestions at this point, so if you have any please post up :)

Sorry to bring this post back from the dead, but...

98 SNAKE EATER, Any updates on this? How were you planning on securing this to the truck?

I put my subs in when making the drawer system!

I actually opted for an 8" sub instead of the slimline 10" and had an enclosure built, but then I got an awesome deal on a pair of KEF KAR 250B's, so I just picked up a couple of MDF cubes and covered them with vinyl

Cleanest subs ever made and that's how I'm set up on a daily basis, but when the I need the extra space, I drop in the 8" sub that fits in the corner.

It's built to fit snug in either corner, so they don't need to be secured.

The original post...

Thanks for the info! The original post on this thread inspired me to build this sealed enclosure with 3/4" MDF...

I'm running a 10" Memphis Audio 15-SC10D4 Shallow 4 ohm DVC subwoofer and it sounds great! I filled the inside with Pollyfill for extra punch. It's right around 1.0 cf in air space.

Tried a bunch of different positions, but the best sound came from downfiring which is exactly what I was hoping for :)

Interestingly enough my sub sounds best downfiring in that specific corner as well. My enclosure is kinda bulky though. I may get a different one.

Subs will usually have the most cabin gain (sound the loudest) when placed in that corner ( or the right side rear). It has to do with acoustics. Placing a home theater sub in a corner of a room will net similar results.
