As much as I dislike the bastardization of the Land Cruiser branding, this is the right move for Toyota. Keeping the prior status quo was obviously not sustainable given the lackluster sales of LC for decades. Toyota is going to have way more success from 4R owners looking for an upgrade. The LC was way too far of a stretch cost wise previously. And the Sequoia way too large. The LC250 may be just right. For consumers that still need more heavy lifting, the GX550 is an option along with the real deal LX600.

Whatever it is I suspect it’s just to keep the badge in the mix. The real game changer is going to be the model released with Toyota’s fledgling hydrogen combustion engine. That’s going to propel the LC into the future.

I wish hydrogen worked here in the USDM, but Honda fogged some 2.5 billion on just a West coast setup along I-5, and that was 1990-92 money.

All the old Ford Pinto jokes pretty much killed the deal.

I like hydrogen too, but wonder if coal/electric cars will kill hydrogen again.

This is great for Toyota and great for us. We get to see more proper 4x4s on the road. I wouldn’t worry about the reliability. The engine will be even less stressed with the huge hybrid assist.

Toyota and Porsche are doing the best I think to stick as closely to what made them famous. So let’s not all overreact here.

Look at the new Mercedes C63 - it went from 8 to 4 cylinders AND it weighs almost as much as a base S class! Or BMW ditching the dual clutch in their M models. Keeping the high performance version of the M3 AWD only. Hondas are junk, both of our new Odysseys (2014 and 2019) left us stranded, with various other rattles and squeaks that can’t get fixed. etc etc

So we have it pretty good Toyota even made this - nobody is pointing a gun at your head to buy. But it offers 99% of what most of you clamored for.

If we REALLY wanted the 300 series Landcruiser, the least we could have done is bought 200s new. At least those of us who could afford it could have done that. I didn’t do that, most Of you didn’t either. Would it have made a difference? Maybe maybe not. But at least we know we tried.

If they bring eKDSS to the LX, I'm sold.

My dream on the LX6 Overtrail would be eKDSS and F/R lockers from the GR300.

Based on what they put on the GX550, I think eKDSS and rear locker are all but guaranteed. I'd say 50/50 on front locker. Wouldn't that be ironic if the only triple locked Toyota you can buy in the US in 2024 is a LX600.

I'm going to keep the GX550 deposit, but not act on it until we see the specs of the LX "Overtrail". Wish they could have come up with a better name.

• No one was begging for the Prado in the US.
• Disingenuous to say the LC “returns” to the US when it’s the little brother we’ve had all along in the 4R/GX.
• I can seat 8, tow 8k, and go pretty much anywhere. This is not an upgrade from the 200.
• Good thing 200s last forever.
So so this right here.
I feel like Toyota USA thinks very poorly of American consumer. Bring the mofo LC300 already

One of my favorite things about the new Cruiser is the hybrid powertrain. Of course the V8 is cool and nostalgic, but the mpg and range - especially off road - sucks. I have no doubt both will be improved with the hybrid with little to no downside besides potentially towing which for me isn’t a factor. This platform will be available in many different flavors with the new GX, LC, Tacoma, 4Runner, and still recent Tundra and Sequoia, so there is something for everyone’s needs. Well except a full EV of course which I have no doubt will be excellent when it comes someday.

Toyota hybrid system basically offers nothing in improved mpg or range. It does add torque off the line and removes idling in stop/go environments. I think it would also be an advantage in slow off road environments (rock crawl) so it is not without some advantages but mpg/ range is not one of them.

Interesting.

So, you see this as the 200 successor that we need.

They have a 2 year wait on the 300. They stopped taking orders. No way would they open it to the largest car market in the world.

Which is not the USA for the 300-series. The voting dollars told them it was too much for us. Too much weight and cost, too little tech and MPG. We never valued core capability, durability, and strength the way other markets did.

On Rimrocker trail, the 200 gets 7mpg and makes it challenging to complete the trail on one tank of gas. 7mpg. There is zero chance the hybrid doesn’t get better than that.

I personally think the GX550 is much closer to a 200 successor, and I think Lexus nailed it. I’d prefer the GX with a hybrid though over the TT V6.

I hate to admit that the interior of the 1958 reminds me a ton of my fj62…. I get why they did it with the Prado…. They’ll sell a ton of these. There is also a nice video of the limited edition driving in the dust and it does scream fj60…. The only reason we are having a tantrum is because how much they are marketing it as the replacement for the 200… it is not and that’s ok…. but I’m in love with the gx550…

It is not the hybrid that will deliver better mileage, but the 2.4.

Not that I'm looking to move away from my 200 any time soon, but the GX550 Overtrail is where I'd be looking. That seems to be the right balance of everything. Not that I like the noise a V6 makes, but it's sure better than a rattley 4cyl. Someone convince Toyota to make a hybrid v8, lol.

Really depends how it is tuned. In addition to owning 3 LCs we have multiple other Toyota / Lexus Hybrids. I’d welcome Toyota’s efficiency tune for the LC. Range has always been an issue even with an additional long range fuel tank.

I am pleased with the idea that 5-10 years down the road if and when I need to replace my 200, that I will have several choices: late MY 200, GX550, new LC or LX600.

My son had a 4 cylinder Corolla for a while. That 4 cylinder, once warmed up, was silent. I guess we’ll see how this one is.

I just wish they had not included a digital IP. I really hate those things. Both of my wife’s BMWs have them and you can’t see them with certain sun angles and with difficulty with polarized sun glasses.

Well if it works like the prior MAX models (Tundra, Sequoia), it shuts off at 18mph so there going to be little gain.
