I was hoping that we could have our own discussion here about tonight's reveal. The thread over in the GX550 forum is like trying to stomach through Reddit. Just too much antagonistic drivel. Maybe that's just a product of the 4Runner and the GX guys all getting together in one place.

On to the topic at hand.

I don't have high hopes for anything ground-breaking tonight. I'm already stepping into this with a bit of a negative attitude that might be unreasonable and that is the fact that all signs point to them marketing this vehicle as THE Land Cruiser in North America, which I believe to be a bit deceptive, especially if the Prado badge is attached to this thing in other markets.

I'm looking forward to everyone's post-game thoughts and hot takes after the reveal tonight.

Whatever it is I suspect it’s just to keep the badge in the mix. The real game changer is going to be the model released with Toyota’s fledgling hydrogen combustion engine. That’s going to propel the LC into the future.

What I said on the other thread-

Call it what you want…

LC Sport
Baby LC
Beta LC

This is not a real LC! Is this going to be called an LC in the countries that sell the 300 along side, No! This was simply made to appease the US emission requirements and help all the GX/4R fanboys finally be able to afford an LC. Toyota doesn’t care they have completely discredited the LC name just like they slap TRD on everything.

I do however like the boxier styling of this, and the GX, more than the 300. Why couldn’t they have just brought the 300 over in multiple trims, and left the GX and 4R in another segment.

It’s their product, they can do what they want with it.

As it is very, very few people in the US use the 200 or would use a 300 to its capability and durability limits. A lighter duty version makes a lot of sense from a profit perspective and last time I checked that is Toyota’s objective.

I’m very unlikely to buy one, but am curious what they come up with. The high performance versions of the Tacoma are a big disappointment to me with the wider stance coming from wheel offset alone.

Car makers have been diluting halo models/trimlines forever. Why wouldn't Toyota cash in on the LC brand/image in the US when their final years were maybe a couple 100k units sold?

We can argue purity/authenticity all we like, but at the end of the day the LC in the US has been an expensive vanity project on the part of Toyota for at least a decade, probably double that.

Arguably, the most capable off roader Toyota ever made was the Mega Cruiser, which was also never available in the US, but i personally wouldn't want to own one. Just like i wouldn't want to own an H1. They're actually really horrible to drive to the terrain they were designed for.

I hope the leak on /r/landcruisers is not real

Don't all the Toyota branded 120/150 series already say Land Cruiser on them? Also, what does any of it matter. If it's a great vehicle, what difference does it make if it says LC on it. And if it's a s***ty vehicle that doesn't diminish any other version of the LC.

For as great as this forum is, it's full of people hung up on badges, it's very strange.

I really like the new GX platform and would enjoy seeing less luxury and more utility from a Toyota variant. Not knowing other details (engine, drivetrain, options, etc...), it's hard to say it if rises to the Land Cruiser standard or not but I'm willing to give it a chance! Also, I bought a 200 to last a lifetime, not planning or needing to replace it with the next variety anytime soon anyway. I'm just a fan watching the show.

Toyota seems to have everything they need to make a proper modern LC now…

  • Triple Locked 300 chassis from the Japan off road model
  • Boxier retro styling from the Baby LC and GX
  • Hybrid Turbo 6 from the Sequoia
Offer different vanity trims to appease the masses and call it a day.

Maybe the prettiest shot of it:

Also since the round headlight model also has the I-Force Max badge, seems that it isn't a base model but just a different body style. Engine options could be available on both. The round headlight model may be called the "1958" model
