Trip data from my 1500 mile drive back to Illinois from Scottsdale. No issues. Some fun analysis to be done for data geeks. Actually working on turning it into a data set for a data analysis project for a class my mom teaches at the local college.

Looking to test both hard and soft skills. Quantitative and qualitative. Just a fun little project.
  • Combine the data, cleanse and analyze
  • Visualize interesting insights
    • mapping?
    • correlated line graphs?
    • etc.
  • Identify anomalies and attribute reasons (malfunction, failure, unmeasured variable etc.)
    • Fuel efficiency compare over two legs of the trip
      • similar speed profiles
      • similar elevation/rpm profiles
      • similar ambient temps etc.
      • what data is missing? Wind speed and direction.
        • major tailwind on the leg from santa rosa, nm to hooker, ks
That kind of stuff.

What OBD2 app did you use to log the data?

Oh, and you forgot TPMS data and altitude …. 😜

I used OBD Fusion to log the data. I run it for dashboards when I'm on a road trip or on the trail and have it logging any time its connected.

Nice looking back side. :p:p

Added an air quick connect to the spare tire swingout. I have the hi-lift bracket but don't cary a hi-lift so there was a perfectly sized hole right there to mount into. No drilling, cutting or anything. Just a quick connect, a corresponsing NPT to push connect fitting and some air line to connect into the existing air lines. This was like a 10 minute job since I already had my original quick connect in the tailgate. Its still there and functional, I just installed a T fitting in the line and added a short run for this guy.

A new charcoal canister and a new gas cap for good measure later and I'm all good...

Recents - 1 of 1 (4).jpeg

My aftermarket warranty runs through October 5th, 2023 or 125,000 miles. For the first time in recorded history, the CEL and trouble codes showed up a few days BEFORE the warranty expired, not after. They covered it.

I think that brings my total covered repairs to: ~$4,000 on a $2099 warranty all of which took place between 89,000 - 124,000 miles over the course of 4 years.

Those warranty repairs included: Valley Plate Leak, SAIC Pump and Charcoal Canister

During that period the radiator had begun visible cracking but did not fail, so I replaced it out of pocket.

The reason for the fuel line item on this most recent invoice was that I didn't realize two things:
  1. The charcoal canister is accessible without dropping the tank or even the skid. My spare tire is on a swingout so the canister was readily accessible.
  2. For the various evap tests to run (even when triggered manually in TechStream), the fuel level must be between 1/4 and 3/4 tank.
I wanted the leave it close to empty in case they had to drop the tank.

Glad they covered it for ya.

You do not have an LRA right? But have had recent gas boiling. Correct?

I’m about to drop my aux tank and move it over to my new one. I have thought about replacing the charcoal canister as PM but I don’t think that will really do much as the new rig has been only in grocery service and I doubt has seen much of any boiling.

No LRA on my rig. Gas boiling has been an issue for me at every Cruise Moab, LCDC and any other event where I'm spending considerable time moving slowly in 4L, at elevation, where ambient temps are over 75f. I think the conditions/heat build-up cause the gas to boil but then the vapors overcome the system and cause damage to the canister, in turn making the canister is less effective and then the boiling gets worse. Vicious cycle. With the new canister in place, I'm also making efforts to reduce the opportunity for heat to build up in the first place.

I'm curious to see how much a new one helps. I'd be tempted to pickup once from salvage with less miles if it does. Also, it looks like their are two part numbers 77740-60471 and 77740-60520. I wonder if there is a difference?

Public Service Announcement: 24 hours with EC Offroad.

I recently ordered the newer offering in terms of head units from EC Offroad here:

In general it was my understanding that the Aussie Sahara trim was the equivalent of the US Spec trim. When they emailed me about the shipping cost being $60 higher than quoted, I asked about compatibility just to be sure. They responded that it would not be compatible with a US Spec cruiser and suggested a different version that I did not want.

$3198 aud shipped.

I asked that they just cancel the order.

This is when they said they would be happy to cancel the order with a 10% fee. This amounts to nearly $300 aud to cancel the order. Not a restocking fee for something that was sent and returned, but for something that never even shipped. When I pointed this out they pointed me to their website, which does actually call for a 20% restocking fee. Well ok there it is. Surely they would rather have a future customer who appreciates the advice and engagement than a restocking fee for something that never left stock right? Nope. They were keen to point out how nice they were being by only charging me 10%.

I didn't have much choice as they had my money, but to accept the 10% hit for nothing but 24 hours of trouble. Bad on me for not seeing the restocking fee on cancelled orders the same as a returned order.

Just want others to be aware. That head unit is not compatible and EC Offroad would rather take $300 aud for nothing than deliver a positive customer experience to an enthusiast likely to have future needs. They didn't mislead me. They didn't make me place that order. They didn't even have to offer up an alternative. I'm not saying they did anything wrong at all, but charging that fee in this circumstance, they failed to do the right thing. I offered them $50 for their trouble and they offered to keep the full 20% instead if I didn't want the 10% offer.

When people tell you who they are, believe them.

That's unfortunate. I wonder if it has something to do with credit card fees?

When I bought mine, right after I ordered it, I got an email saying the unit was backordered (even though their website said "in stock") and it was going to take a month or so. after "a month or so turned into more lie 3 months, they did offer to cancel my order. They didn't say anything about a fee but maybe that was coming. I'd have been pretty mad about a restocking fee for a backordered item not listed as such when I placed the order.

My overall experience with EC Offroad has been mixed. I got some good over the phone and email technical help but I also got some pretty poor customer service. An example of poor customer service was when I couldn't get CarPlay to consistently work and I tried to update the zlink app to the newest version and it turned out that only the old version worked with the head unit. I couldn't find the old version on the internet to reinstall and EC Offroad said it was a customized app just for their HU's (pretty sure that was BS). I asked them to send me the install files or whatever and they said they only way they could fix it was for me to send the HU back to them so they could reinstall the app. Yeah, no. The whole reason I went with them and paid a premium price for my HU vs. Phoenix or something was because of a perceived benefit of good tech support and customer service and their focus on LCs and off road gear in general. I just have accepted no CarPlay on my $2800 HU (but to be honest, I didn't really like CarPlay anyway).

That is super shady, and I’d consider disputing the charge with your credit card company.
