The new Toyota Trails is here!

Pretty excited about the new Toyota Trails issue for March/April. We got some 200 Series love in there from the July trip to the Maze District of Canyonlands. Apologies in advance for my various errors (yes I know Hite is in Utah, I was there) and the repetitive adjectives. It was a great trip with @sdnative and @linuxgod and their sons. A true highlight for me, and now we can talk about it and share the incredible photos, which I'll let Geoff and Eric share since they took all the good ones. Mine aren't nearly as pretty but here are a few... :p

Hey I shared our photos - they’re in the magazine! ;-) If people want them they’ve gotta pay the $35 for a TLCA membership (which if they do it soon they’ll get the physical copy too).

Seriously though other than being disappointed we didn’t make the cover (hard to compete with a 40) the editors did a great job and I’ll make a plug for people to join TLCA if you haven’t already to get the magazine and support the organization. And I’ll post a few pics which weren’t submitted to TT later this week, but here’s the centerfold…

Yeah, everyone should be a TLCA member! The magazine alone is worth it, but it also an incredible organization that does a lot for this community.

I'll reiterate that everone should join TLCA and get the magazine, but I am posting this PDF excerpt here for posterity as part of this trucks history.

As mentioned in the article, I was dealing with some fuel boiling issues on the trip, but I have since replaced the charcoal canister and associated parts under warranty when I got a code a month or so later, and haven't had the issue again. I am still looking to do some venting of my BudBuilt skids around the Cats as I believe that some heat is building up in that area, but the charcoal canister probably contributed to its own slow demise in a vicious cycle as it aged and dealt with more high temp/high elevation miles and associated venting.

128,350 mile update. Now owned the truck for nearly 40,000 miles.

Nothing new to report aside from lots of successful trail time in and around Ouray in August. Truck ran great and didn’t boil fuel running non-ethanol fuel.

Tackled the Wall on Poughkeepsie Gulch without issue or even hesitation. A good line and lockers made it easy.

I’ve got some preventative maintenance upcoming now that I’m at 128k. The list for next week includes:

  • DC Engineering XP High Output Alternator (270 Amp) - Should drive the 50a DC-DC charger well enough to keep the 2x 100Ah Lithiums charged nicely while also giving the X2 Power AGM in the starting position the voltage it likes.

  • Starter replacement with OEM. Going to explore running wire from the starter motor to an easily accessible contact point to make it easier to start even if the solenoid craps out. Should beat the hell out of the long screwdriver method if done right.
  • Replace water pump and thermostat
  • Replace idler pulley, tensioner and belt.
That’s about it. The truck continues to be an absolute gem and the best build I've ever done. May well consider giving her up in favor of the newly announced LX700h Overtrail that’s captured my imagination, but it’s going to take a pretty aggressive offer to get me there. Thankfully I have some time to talk myself out of making a change.

How many years did you get from the X2?

How many years did you get from the X2?

5 Years nearly on the dot and still going strong despite living in Arizona, having a significant load most of the time and really getting more utilization than a normal battery. Its really impressive. I only replaced because I was doing the Alternator upgrade and the timing seemed good.

did you run the diode thingy? If so what hot temp voltages were you getting?

Good thing you switched to 5-30 oil at over a million miles.

I have always run the first version HKB diode fuse since putting the X2 in the truck within a week of buying it. Not actually sure what voltage I was getting but I remember it being closer to 14 than without. I also ran the X2 Power AGM in my L322 Range Rover without a diode and it also did extremely well. I'm a huge fan of those batteries. Its the only brand I will run. I'll also say that I refuse to engage anyone in a debate about AGMs under the hood. I have enough experience running this particular brand/model of AGM in extreme conditions under the hood that I have ZERO concerns about doing so going forward. Can't/won't speak to other brands.

Currently running same X2. Storred it on charger for about two years and tests at 100% healthy. Now that it’s installed I’m running the adjustable HKB but at the lowest setting.

why did you switch to 5w-30? and what were you running before?

my 80 has way more miles, but it really likes 15w-40

Well this is my build thread for the 200 which calls for 0w-20 in the U.S. market probably for efficiency or something. The valve train has always been a little talkative on all the 5.7L engines upon startup (especially when it’s cold out), but it quiets way down with the 5w-30 which is on of a range of weights that are specified for the 5.7L outside the U.S. market.

I prefer my petrol V8 not sound like diesel powered sewing machine.
