Update. The 93 is ticking. Pretty certain it is the thrust bearing for the oil pump/power steering pump drive gear. @Pin_Head helped narrow it down. It doesn't appear to be coming from the motor itself. Used a mechanics stethoscope and don't hear it on the motor top end or bottom end. Put it on the steering pump reservoir and it sounds like a bag of rocks in a washing machine.

I have a spare motor that I am going to start rebuilding as soon as @beno get's back from Turkey so I can start replacing pieces and parts. Debating on whether or not I will do a full on rebuild or what. My initial feeling was to just replace seals/gaskets and go. But now that I have had time to think about it I am leaning towards doing it and doing it right so I don't have to worry about it. The motor has 153k on it and it spins freely. Other than that, I know nothing about it's history.

If you feel adventurous, you could try replacing the PS pump and gear. Maybe you have a spare PS pump on your other engine? Something is causing the idler gear to oscillate back and forth and it could be related to gear wear and the pulsation of the vanes in the PS pump. Even a single ding or chipped tooth on the PS gear will make the idler gear knock like that. There is no thrust washer for the oil pump idler / drive gear. It is just the machined surface of the timing chain cover that sets the clearance. If it wears too much, you need a new cover.

Thats what I am thinking (as far as swapping out the PS pump and gear from my spare). It is sitting in storage so I have to go pick it up this weekend. Going to bring it all back to my house and start tearing in to it. Of course it has been 60-70 the past week and the first chance I will get to work on it will be this weekend when it is 30 degrees...

One other thing I forgot to mention. I took my 92 and 93 to the dealership to have the oil changed. 93 because of miles, 92 because of months. I asked the dealership to drain them both through cheesecloth (which I provided along with a box of donuts for the mechanic doing the oil change). No shrapnel in the oil on either. (I didn't suspect any on the 92 but had some concerns that I was going to find some on the 93 but didn't).

The oil pan and front pan arch seal(?) is leaking, the trans is leaking, the power steering lines are leaking. Basically, it is leaking everywhere so swapping out the motor and trans is going to make all of this simpler.

A wise man (or woman, I forget which...) once said "Landcruisers don't leak, they mark their territory."

If that's the case his territory runs from California to Ohio! I think there's even a spot in my driveway!

I say rebuild it. But I never did understand why you bought the 93 in the first place.

I bought it to drive it and not care what happens to it. My 92 is my baby. Too much sentimental value to me to beat it. It needs some love. Seals and what not on the motor. I will keep it forever so I want to rebuild the Mighty 3FE. And I need a Land Cruiser to drive while I do that.

Unfortunately there are no cures for your desease and Mud is more of an enabler than an addiction support group. :flipoff2:

I did just buy this today for $500. Jumped on the "drive a lame a$$ beater to save wear and tear on the 80" bandwagon. 75,312 miles. Drives. AC blows cold. Windows don't work. Bought it from a girl that was given it by her grandmother. She drove it for 3 years. Clean as a whistle minus the dent. It'll serve as my DD while I swap the motors on the 93.

I have no idea what you are talking about. I have no disease! It is perfectly normal to buy Land Cruisers I don't need!

What's the first mod going to be? Put a roof rack on that beauty and go "over landing".

I put gas in it. $21.00. Should last me about 8 years!

The windows don't work so I need to figure that out. Haven't even checked the fuse. I'm thinking it may be the main switch control like on the 80s. When the main goes out they all go out. Not a huge priority. AC blows cold and I'm used to not having windows that work, I drive an 80!

I blame @Heckraiser for my purchase of the Corolla.

Wait... I think it's contagious. I just bought one I don't need!

Put in a new window switch and it'll DOUBLE its value!!!
