The Steering Column Cover -- Crazy Glue is a Long Shot

This is a trivial repair item, but I'm sure I will need help with simple stuff and thought I would share a very minor repair that was also quite annoying. The steering wheel cover had become increasingly lose and finally just fell off.

#1. You might think you just need screws. Think again. The screws are probably there with the broken plastic. They sort of look like washers -- but they are your problem.

There are 5 screws -- three to mount the bottom to the column and 2 to connect the top to the bottom.

After over a decade of banging my knees on them, they couldn't take it. If the new cover lasts a decade, I'll be more than happy.

#2. Give it up and order the part from cruiser dan. In the $80 range including shipping.

When ordering, you need the color. Also, with or without cruise control. The cruise control lever makes the bottom a pita to get out. You have to drop the plastic trim cover below the steering to get clearance.

If you see a screw on the cruise control lever, forget it. It is just covering some wires.

I had the same issue. I glued them back, and it lasted till my next time off road. Next time I plan on getting some sort of fine plastic mesh or screen. (Like the stuff that is over fish tanks or something.) And then wrapping that around the outer circle of the broken areas. Then gluing it thoroughly. Almost like a composites type repair.

I've used this stuff called "Shoe Goo". It comes in a red tube and is as tough as nails once it dries. It's a rubber / silicone compound that I use for pert'near everything. It also works fantastic for keeping the side view mirrors from wiggling!

Just took mine apart. crazy glue is drying. It will be followed by reinforcing wire/mesh and epoxy

I just took the cover off. The crazy glue will break.

I took the easy route and bought the new part from Toyota. Figured it's just part of owning an old rig.

on a 60 series i used extra long bolts with fender washers. Being on the bottom side you can hardly tell.

I have had great luck with fixing these types of breakages with good old JB Weld. Even have used it to fill in missing "material" ie the stand-offs, and then file and drill back to the proper height/screw size. They will likely never break again.

Use the loctite super attak glue for glue in the broken plastics and then reinforce with Plastic padding Chemical metal. I did so and it has last for many months now!

I used the JB Weld too. I use it for allot of things and it WILL NOT break or crack like crazy glue and holds forever. I hit a deer with my pickup and had to "JB" my headlight assembly back together and it is like new again. Also worked on a vacuum advance bracket that had broken on my old 22R. That repair held for over 6 years and was still working when I sold the truck. JB Weld is good stuff!
