Meet Gibbs!
Our five month old yellow lab. A couple at Bragg with an alpha male German Shepard (who didn't like this sweet guy) got him from a family who had just had a baby and couldn't handle all this puppy and a newborn, so after jumping homes a few times.... This big chunk is ours! He makes yet another lab that ONSC has.. But, this guy isn't black so hopefully there will be a little less confusion on who he is roaming around events hahah. His paws are massive, I am interested to see how big the vet thinks he's going to be.

@JohnVee

Dino looks much more relaxed. Yeah!!!!!

So... Dog beds. For anxious chewers. What do y'all like? Dino had the misfortune today of needing to be left alone in our bedroom while we met with a stranger at the other end of the house for an hour, while the thunder was rolling in, and before his cool down period from a nice long training session. Perfect storm for panic. He shredded his bed AND the blanket on the human bed. It's the second time he's done this. We've been working on distracting him during stressful events but this guy's still a mystery as to what interests him. Toys, food, attention, crate? Nope x4.

Looking at the K9 Ballistics Chew Proof. Their Tough series is also possibly on the radar, as is the firehose bed from Duluth Trading Co. Who can recommend something?

Trazodone and alprozalam.

For dog beds, nothing is chew proof for a determined chewer similar to our dog, and presumably yours. We bought this from Amazon most recently, and it's fine, but like the kong and various canvas beds before it, nothing lasts.

@JohnVee
Have you tried crate training ? Not just for storms and unsupervised period of time, but it really works to provide the dog with his/her own home. We are currently training our 4th malamute, JR, to enjoy his crate.

Try primopads. We just stumbled upon them when buying a new crate for our new pup. Our 12 year old Denver, Alaskan Mal, thinks he has gone to heaven. They have a tie down system which goes under the mat inside a crate. The mat fits the entire space of the crate And with it tied down, your furry kid dog can’t lift it up to chew/tear apart.

What do you do in the midst of moving during a pandemic, we drove from
PA to western Knoxville to pick this guy in June. Made for a great excuse to use the rtt trailer even if we camped at Koa campground for Only 6 hours. Meet JR

Trazodone
I could write a book based our experiences with giving him Trazadone. Nutshell version - it usually does absolutely nothing; if it does anything at all, the effect usually takes 6-8 hours to show (about the time it be wearing off nicely). Our vet has been great working with us on this but we've all pretty much ruled Trazadone out. I can't recall why the vet doesn't want to try alprozalam.

He loves his crate but still spazzes out in it at a certain stress level. Reading his stress levels has been a challenge. We ARE continuing to work with him regarding anxiety and the crate.

He's also picked Sarah as his most favoritest human in the world and has gotten very clingy. Managing his anxiety when she's gone hasn't been keeping up with the rate at which it has grown. He isn't destructive at those times but is clearly stressed and in his own world. It's a slow process working on this but we've made some excellent progress. Our trainer has been a great help. Here's a plug for her:

One great thing is that he doesn't consume the padding or blankets that he has shred.

All I can do is wish you the best of luck with those issues, @JohnVee We had Rudy the little psychotic pit bull who exhibited the same behaviors; he actually destroyed wire crates (and injured himself), shredded wooden doors and the trim around them due to his anxiety (he did not chew things up, though). We tried everything, incl a behaviorist at the NCState Vet School, prescriptions, natural calming products, training, exercise, you name it - nothing helped. He also had completely unprovoked aggression toward other dogs, incl our Jacob and we were afraid to leave them alone together for fear of coming home to a bloodbath. Sometimes, just like people, dogs are either wired differently or have experienced such trauma that it just can't be overcome.

I sincerely hope you observe signs of progress, and don't end up in the position we were in. In the end, we had to make a terrible decision, but it was the right one.

Hey @JohnVee. Not sure if we discussed it but I had two dogs with canine cognitive disorder (dementia) and I learned a cheap medication trick from vet that I passed along to my landlords to try with their very neurotic dog that also does not respond well to trazodone - melatonin!

Give 6 mg to start, in am and pm / or as needed. I would say this dog has a need so I suggest am and pm. It was only thing that made a difference in their daily lives after 10 years.

Also, I now give them all my cardboard recycling because they realized they can redirect the dog's separation anxiety destruction by giving him cardboard boxes to shred.

We love our K9 Ballistics (K9 Ballistics® | Indestructible, Chew Proof, Large, Giant & Dog Beds)

We have the raised platform, Tough Bolster Ortho dog bed and the tough ortho dog crate pad X2. Everything is machine washable. Its pricy but worth it. We went through a few beds previously due to them "digging". So far everything has held up to their digging for 2 years

Neither trazodone nor alprazolam work independently, but one of each does the trick for our dog. Vets orders to limit destructiveness.

I have been told by a few different people that cbd is great for dogs that have storm anxiety. I've yet to try it, but I need to.

The only thing we've had good success with was a seizure drug through a clinical trial with ncstate vet school, that was being repurposed for an anti anxiety drug. Worked great, but it was a once a day every day type of drug.

@JohnVee sounds like you are on the right track and are out to do the best for your furry kid. Your dog reminds me of our late Apache. She destroyed one of your wire crates and an actually escaped an airline plastic crate then
Charged and destroyed a wood door to get to her people/pack. Keep up your efforts and maybe you will find something that works.
CBD oil worked for Cheyenne for anxiety and other issues when she was battling cancer.

So we unexpectedly, well I unexpectedly not Andrea, joined the dog owning ranks.
She came home one day with this little thing, lol. A mini golden doodle from some breeder almost 5 hours from here. I thought she was out with her friend on Bainbridge Island all day long.

Anyway. This is Vala (means chosen in my other native tounge) Nickname when she gets excited is Valhalla Vala (coined by my mom)
Its been tough trying to train and give her the attention she craves while i'm as busy as I am at work every day. But the payout there is she is completely attached to me, much to Andrea's chagrin lol. Not sure what she was expecting there.

She isn't too sure about water yet but she seems to like salt water better than fresh water so I take her to the beach every other day.
