Decided to pull the cobwebs off this thread and update it a little bit. This thread really should be the "look what I broke this time" thread, because thats 99% of the stuff I put on here now. :bang:

This is what we found out that what making the clunking noise, it could have been a lot worse...new one is ordered and will be here this week for last minute installation next Saturday...

Well at GSMTR something broke in the front end of the Franken80, so Operation HD Toyota Axle and Front End is officially underway...

The goal is to convert a 9.5 SF rear axle into a 9.5 front diff with 80 series bells/knuckles/birfs. Since all this is happening, I am also moving the tie road infront of the axle, adding crossover steering, regearing to 5.29s (since I now have 2 9.5 diffs), hydro assist steering, AND 3-linking the front end...

Inevitably the Franken80 is going to be down for some time to get all this stuff done

This the donor axle (Thanks Griffin, I still owe you some beer), today we cut off the spring perches and other misc. things and cut of the axle to size. Next step is to get a donor 80 front axle and cut the bells off and mock up how everything should be lined...

Get in touch with that guy in supercharged 80 that launched it over the tabletop at GMP a couple years ago. As I recall, he bent the front housing. Maybe he swapped the whole axle and he's still got the whole thing sitting there collecting dust after swapping it out.

Looking forward to seeing the front end come together. Gonna be some cool fab work going on over the next few weeks. Also looks like you got some good help there to.

I talked to Eric Hagan last night and I am going to get the bells from a housing he has in North Alabama. Its a complete front axle so I can use the knuckles, hubs, birfs, and shafts to help mock up the complete axle to make sure everything lines up like it should...

Sam loves the shop :grinpimp:

Good luck with all the mods, catch up with you next time for a beer ;)

Hannah does too. I am hoping that stays with her long enough to get a little oil in her veins.

At the very least she will be able to drive a manual trans and change her own tire.

I'm drooling at the thought of Franken80 with MORE flex, MORE gearing, more strength and STEERING! Didn't say "more" steering, cause there really wasn't much to start with, was there? :/

Gonna be an unbelievable transformation, no doubt.

I notice that rear shocks still haven't made the list though. :(

Shocks are over-rated, heck Nick likes the challenge of wheeling without coils sometimes:poof:

Rear shocks are on the list, i just didnt put them in that post...

After GSMTR this year, I NEED SOME REAR SHOCKS or shock

I use to always say that, but after driving in my white 80 this past weekend at Durhamtown, I remember how the Franken80 use to ride

Cottonlander here lurking in the GA Cruisers clubhouse...hope y'all don't mind.

Nick - looking forward to watching the build. I just re-read Eric's original thread on this the other day. Are you planning to use a RHD steering arm and setting it up double shear? They are stupid expensive, but Hellfire sells a set of knuckles with larger trunion bearings and beef high steer arms that would be awesome on a project like this.

Good luck!

I don't know if anyone still reads Peterson's 4Wheel magazine, but there is an article in the July '14 issue "Won Ton Axle, Swap Toyota's Toughest Axle into anything." In the article they install a set of the Hellfire replacement knuckles on an 80 axle.

Why did you choose a 9.5" SF rear axle housing as opposed to the FF iteration? Was it just a "this is what I got for free" kind of thing or is there a design difference that makes the SF better?

Yeah, I just finished reading that Sid. (though some of the technical specs. were incorrect). I emailed Harry so hope they put a correction up. Not a bad article at all.

Yea, they definatly had some of their dates wrong.

Certainly not going to speak for Nick, but this was the logic from Eric's build when asked if the FF would work:

"possibly. But the FF dif cover is welded on the backside and SF have an inspection plate with an identical stud configuration. The simplicity of the SF was that the dif used to be on the front side of the housing. I pulled it and the longer studs, made the necessary groves for the ring, and inserted it on the backside of the housing."
