Ah. Those 8" diffs sure are cute.

This.

8" is junk if you wanna be taken seriously. gotta go bigger or just start stacking up errybody's spare oem R&P's like i was doing... You will break again, so prepare yourself.

What other options do I have??? How effective is the "heat treated & cryo ring and pinion" at longfield? (I have a spare front R&P)

I did the "last" BIG upgrade on the Franken80...

Installed the 3:1 Marlin T-Case "Crawler" gears in the Franken80. I had never seen the inside of an 80's t-case, it was quite impressive and interesting. I wanted to get the gears installed before baby Sam gets here, because I dont see me having any time between then and GSMTR. The initial test drive (John's backyard), I like them and cant wait to test them out on the trail...

Thanks to the "Crew" for all the help getting the gears in...

Awesme! Congrats. Can't wait to see them in action. GSMTR next time I'll see you on the trail I guess?

I'm out putting the front end back together on mine which is the last major "drivability" issue. After this it'll only be things like installing seats, seat belts, wheels and shifters. Oh, and I gotta build a full-belly skid somehow.

Nick, did you know there's an offroad park just northeast of where we wheeled in Gurley? Its called Hollytree I think.

I've never heard of it, but I just watched some YouTube videos and it looks fun...some of it looked like Gurley

Gonna have to check it out. Although for free, Gurley was pretty awesome too. Was gonna say that Gurley didn't have anything as big as that place, but in truth, it had plenty - just wasn't cut into a trail [yet].

When's your test run for the 80 gonna be?

Looking good Nick. I'm sure they'll make a big difference. Everything I've seen on them just says it's a 25% reduction. Any idea what your final drive ratio is now?

Never mind. I googled.

A442 1st gear: 2.950:1
Transfer Low: 2.49:1 (stock)
Transfer Low: 3.0:1 (new)
Axle ratio: 4.10 (stock)
Torque Conv multiplier 1.8 (estimated from the interwebs)

Old ratio: 2.95*2.49*4.1*1.8=54.21:1

New ratio: 2.95*3.0*4.1*1.8=65.31:1

:steer:

Those ratios look better than what was posted in the 80's section. This is what was posted in the 80's section, but it has the newer transmission (A343F) and doesnt have the torque converter in the mix (it was in a thread on the debate of which to do first TC gears or 5.29's). Plus you are the ALL KNOW TOYOTA PARTS GUY :grinpimp:...

"These are the values I used (correct if wrong)
Transmission (A343F) 1st Gear: 2.804
Stock Transfer Case: 2.488
Marlin TC Gear: 3.116
Stock Diff: 4.10
Then obviously: 5.29

In stock form your crawl ratio in 1st gear would be: 28.6:1
With just the Marlin Crawler TC gears: 35.82:1
With just the 5.29 diff gears: 36.9:1
Both, 5.29 and Marlin Crawler gears: 46.22:1"

The torque converter basically adds another multiplier to the mix. I don't know that ratio/multiplier off hand. The 1.8 I took from a thread on MUD. Yours is an order truck so I believe it is 2.95 1st gear vs the 2.80. I'm not 100% on any of those #s tho. Combo of Google and MUD info. :meh:

Quote from Marlin's web site:

" These gears replace your stock 2.488:1 low range ratio with a 3.116:1 Marlin Crawler ratio! The end result is a*25% gear reduction*for your FJ80, FZJ80, or 100-series Toyota Land Cruiser, which combined with your automatic transmission's torque converter, results in almost a 75% total reduction for awesome Rock Crawling!"

So 25% gear reduction + torque converter = 75% overall reduction. Obviously it adds quite a bit.

Nick, have you run across this thread yet? Some pretty sweet wheelin pics and sweet 80's of all levels and types.

And we need some updates on the gears too! Spill the beans; Inquiring minds want to know.

That thread is one of the best threads in the 80's sections, another one is the Wild Wheeling Videos (https://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/165227-wild-wheeling-videos.html)....

As for the gears, I am quite impressed with their down hill speed control. GSMTR will be the real test when I get to wheel more steep down hill trails...

Let me pull off the cobwebs from this thread. I havent posted anything on here in over 7 months...

For 2 of those 7 months, my truck was in pieces, but all of yall have seen those pictures, so im not gonna post them up here too. But something positive happened to my truck this weekend. The Frnaken80 joined the cool kids group because I installed my new 22 in. LED light bar...

Next weekend I have a few loose end to tie up on the truck to get it ready for the New Year's ride, but the next big thing is figuring out how to do a rear shock setup. I am figuring that part of the rear floor is going to have to be cut up some to make some room.

Here is the new light (now I can night wheel :steer:)

The truck never sits level....plus with all the :beer::beer: you have been drinking because of Comcast, I am sure everything looks crooked :flipoff2:
