Made a run to the local beer store. I was shocked to find a few KBS still on the shelf. Didn't want to be greedy so I only grabbed one.
My wife and I were at White Whale yesterday; one of my best friends from college owns that place. We picked up a few of the same beers after sampling everything he had on tap.

My drinking gets expensive when my favorite beers (KBS, Backwoods Bastard, etc.) are $5/bottle...sometimes more. So I started home brewing recently. I did a few extract kits (simple as a cake box recipe') which were good, but then I tried my first all grain batch (from scratch). It won't be bottle aged for another week, but I couldn't resist. This is a Belgian Dark Strong Ale (some call it a Quad in reference to a Belgian Dubbel or Tripel). Its spicy but not too fruity, with mild dark malt flavors, ABV 11%. I was pleased, and yes, I'll share.

Tried this one today.... Not bad.... also got around to transferring some of my hoard to the roof wine bar.

Don't sleep on Pliny - meant to be drank fresh!

Don't worry I don't i've had it for about 4 days and is just up there so I can drink it next time i'm on the roof. LOL

Everything else is a dark high ABV beer, except one Brett IPA that is being aged a little longer.

You had me worried there for a minute

yep I age the majority of those beers for 1-2 years although the two rare goose islands will be aged until a day special enough to crack one open

If you're not, y'all should follow Kudu Craft Beer & Coffee in downtown Charleston on Facebook. They often post pictures of new kegs and stuff they are about to tap; they just posted a picture of Lunch American IPA by Maine Beer Company which is an outstanding beer (BeerAdvocate 96, RateBeer 100).

Charleston has 22 breweries, but the latest one is the best. Munkle is located on upper Meeting Street and is Charleston's first Abbey brewery. Their Belgian Blonde, Pale, Wit, and especially the Brune, are outstanding. The Brune is a Belgian Brown, very similar to a Bière de Garde. True to style, they all taste "Belgian", that unique complexity you find with true Belgian ales. There's no IPAs or periwinkle glitter beer, just straight-up authentic Belgian ales.

We need to plan a downtown Cruiser Crawl soon.

Who was asking about snobs?... on the other hand- I’m up for a beer ride.

For all of of you ne'er-do-well beer snobs who think all lagers are Miller Lite, I challenge you to try Hi-Wire's doppelbock, Twice as Nice. This is one of my favorite doppelbocks, and at $12/6-pk, you can't beat it. A bock is the heaviest body of lagers and the doppel (dubble) is the darkest. Its seasonal, so you'll have to go to Total Wine or Bottles.

Its a heavy malt, deep notes of caramel and dark fruit, and finishes with subtle spice hints.

@Beau Diddly - how was the final product? I reread this thread and didn't see any follow up posts from you on the results after bottle aging.

What else have you brewed since June?

When it comes to Land Cruisers, Murphy is always around to bite me in the butt. However, the brewing has gone well. The above mentioned Belgian Dark Strong brewed in May turned out to be incredible. Heavy beers like this one, stouts, and barleywines to name just a few, get better over time. I only have a few bottles left, but brewed another batch of the same, and bottled it about 3-4 weeks ago. Its good at 4 weeks bottle age, very good at 2-3 months, and outstanding at 5-6 months.

My Oktoberfest was true to style, but I was wanting a bigger body. My Barleywine turned out good, so I've brewed another batch. I'm aging this one with charred white-oak (whisky barrel) bourbon soaked staves. My next venture will be a doppelbock, and after that I will just concentrate on refining and hopefully perfecting the styles/recipes I've brewed.
You're overdue for a vacation to Charleston. If you ever make it, I'll let you be the judge.

I know that @Beau Diddly may be the only Belgian Quad drinker in the bunch... but in case I missed someone, here was our holiday Quad sampling. Gulden Draak 9000 is my favorite, but it was a tough competition. Frankly, you just can’t go wrong with any of these beers; they are all delicious.
