Hey gents, my better half finally talked me into a night in Austin for my birthday. I've tried to avoid Austin at all cost except dealing with the 35 nightmare when passing through and dropping some parts off to a couple folks. I guess the greenies and holy rollers have kept me away. Anyways, heading up next Saturday afternoon and staying at the Sheridan (I think) downtown. What are some fine places for food that have a nice vegetarian selection? Microbreweries? I believe Amy wants to check out the moonshine joint because they supposively have a great brunch. Anyways, thought I would hit you all up for some advice. Thanks mates

Sully

Are you sure you are not a greenie yourself...posting at 4:20 and asking about vegetarian restaurants :flipoff2:
Stay away from dirty 6th(stretch between congress and 35)

Happy early birthday. Live Oak and Independence are some local breweries you might be able to check out that aren't too far from downtown. If you are looking for straight veggietarian food, Mothers is the place to go. Otherwise, most restaurants have "veggie" friendly selections. Moonshine's buffet is alright. Other suggestions, Fonda San Miguel, Iron Cactus, Paggi House, Jack Allens Kitchen(my fav)

When are you guys coming down?

That's hilarious. I didn't even realize it was 4:20 when I posted and I'm definitely not the vegetarian, Amy is.

Thank you for the suggestions, I will pass them along to my food analyzer and see what she has to say.

We have ate at iron cactus here in San Antonio, awesome food! Tequila glazed steak was awesome.

Anyways thank you for the early birthday wish, we are heading up Saturday the 25th after the Basura Bash here in San Antonio.

Moonshine has a killer brunch and a nice fireplace .

Bacon is a new place with a vegetarian menu. That's how vege friendly Austin is.

Call me, I'll help you out.

Don't go to East 6th bars when/if you go out. West 6th and other areas such as 4th and Colorado is where it's at. Or you can drop in in Lee and Tucker at Kiss n fly or Oil can harrys ( i keed, these are gay bars)

W 2nd street is nice with plenty of grub, and that's my neighborhood! You really can't go wrong On those 4 blocks alone you have nothing but great stuff.
In order of walking:
"bar on 2nd" and 2nd on congress James beard nominee
Cru- wine bar (over priced)
Joes - great breakfast and coffee.
Taverna- great brunch, 1 mimosa and Bellini. Great Italian fine cuisine
W hotel bar
Coal Vines- good new pizza and wine bar
La condessa- top 3 Austin restaurant. Higher end Mexican(interior) fusion concept and unique cocktails- mixology
There is a night club up stairs.
Malaga- they do Tapas only, still pretty cool, don't come hungry or short of change.

If you are ok dropping 200 for two on dinner and drinks, you will have to go to UCHI on south Lamar. Amazing. Take a cab. But it is sushi, I guess Amy doesn't do fish?

Thanks for the advice man, I really appreciate it. Yea dropping $200 on sushi definitely isn't for me. I've got a freezer full of walleye which is better than anything I can get down here. Only problem is that it is in big bags and I don't want to waste it since I'm the only one here that eats fish.

So Lee and Tucker can be found at those bars eh?

I'm not sure what the broken spoke is but I'm sure I could drink for free all night there and most likely make money stripping huh. Lmao. Chris you sound like you have personal experience with that joint.

By the way Chris, where are my engine bay photos you were going to send me homie? Only the inside pics showed up.

There isn't any stripping going on at the Spoke, but a lot of two stepping.

I'd blow off the Moonshine brunch; it's overrated. Instead of that, reserve a couple of seats downstairs at Stubbs, for the gospel brunch. Two shows every Sunday, but to ensure you get a good seat to check out the band, get a reservation. Fine southern food, and righteous gospel music !

Umm I can't say that is my thing. While yes, I am a student at Incarnate Word, I lack the religious side, but heck who knows I might just be there

Dude, it's not religious at all. It's just great southern comfort food, Bloody Mary's, and fine music. Check it out, you'll see.

x2 on Stubb's gospel brunch. Beware of the bums that hang out in the surrounding couple of blocks, but the brunch is excellent and like Jeff says, fine music. They don't even pass a collection plate.

Lol I'm confused. So is it gospel music? I'm kind of lost on what this Stubbs underground deal is. I guess I'll have to check it out. What time shall I be there?

I think it starts at 1000. If you want to sit at a table with a view of the band, you may want to make reservations. Some weekends it's tough to get a seat. Yes, old time gospel music, but not bible thumper stuff. Rock and roll gospel.

If you have doubts about the gospel thing, Moonshine is a decent alternative for brunch, in the same hood.

If you don't mind busting out of downtown, the brunch at Fonda San Miguel is outstanding.

Lee is showing his shoal creek hippiness.

There is nothing overrated about shrimp corn dogs and moonshine brunch.

I think you will be fine wherever!

Hey, I won't deny my Shoal Creek hippiness, but that wasn't me sayin' the Moonshine brunch was overrated. That was Mr. Daniel, our in-house restaurant critic. :hillbilly:

Another good Sunday brunch spot is Trudy's North Star, for those of you who don't mind slumming.

Yep, it was me that said that about Moonshine's brunch. I like the restaurant a lot, but not for brunch.

Stubb's has two separate seatings for gospel brunch, and you should sit downstairs, in order to see the band. If you're upstairs, you can still hear them, but won't be able to see them unless you have a seat right on the rail. Just call ahead and get reservations, it's easy. I believe Threadgills also has a Sunday gospel brunch, but I've never been to that.
