Boy Howdy! Sounds like Wild Bill had arowdy
day at the Gulches. Heather and I escaped any damage except for my well worn driverside bumperette in the rear. I actually tagged it again backing up in our campsite!
Man, we had a great time! The weather was perfect for wheeling and camping. The competition was thoroughly entertaining as we got to witness a few runs in "The Bowl" and then on "Shipwreck". I'm uploading video today into my Photobucket account. I'll post up a link when I'm done.
Marshall, thanks for putting this one together. We definitely need to hit this place again since it is so close to most of the Upstaters. If these pictures dont' convince the ones who couldn't make it, then I don't know what will.
The campsite we stayed in (#1) was ideal for a large group and out of the way from most of the trails, unlike many we saw along trail 2. If we needed to expand, camp 2 is just about 75 yards away.
The trail system seems confusing at first but once you get the hang of it, it's not bad at all. Two major trails (#1 & #2) traverse the upper and lower edges of the park. Then all the challenge trails (most of them 1-way) go up from the bottom trail to the top trail. You loop around again and find a new challenge. Skip's map is just a wee bit off scale, that's all. We tackled 3, 5, 56, 8, 13, 14, 17, 19, 20 and 24 plus Suspension Junction & the Pipe Garden. I got hung up on my first run across the Pipes and a friendly giant Taco gave me a tug.
I also have to say that I'm feeling a little better about my spotting skills. I got plenty of practice this weekend since we had such a small group running the trails in the late afternoon and evening. Shhhh, Cat likes taking over the driver's seat too.I think I'm finally finding my groove (or is it rut?). A big thanks to my mentors, Dan and Heather!
Pics and vids coming soon!
