Toyota Landcruiser FJ40

Anyone know this 40? Any recommendation for a mechanic (or MUD member) near "West Valley" I could pay for an inspection?

Interesting he still has this. V8 fJ40 FOR SALE Very nice cruiser and work was done by Dave Gore ( @lcwizard )

I shouldn't be surprised he still has it. I bought his other 76 and it was listed for sale here for a year before he bumped it again. It was a much cheaper cruiser. $18,000 back then was a lot more for a FJ40 then today.

The original thread stated it was sold, now it's back on CL, with his original photo's 4 yrs later; for the original price, not the reduced? Granted timing tends to be a big factor, 18k may work now?

Just looked at these today in person! Pretty nice design and seems well built. Nothing too sturdy or heavy duty as an ARB would probably be but for the price I thought it was a good deal/product. He already has a good bit of orders in just 2 days of having the ad on craigslist.

If you'd like to know more info PM me. Didn't ask if he was on MUD but he did mention that prices will probably go up next month

Where was it that you reviewed this... In Phoenix or elsewhere? Curious given the location outlined on your user name.

again not CL but just popped up, it's on ADV so you'll need to log in to see the thread.

Yup, this is it.

The holy grail of toyota trucks. The one every one wants. Makes the girls (and guys) go weak in the knees and look upon you like a god.

Well, maybe it would be THE holy grail if it had a straight axle but the IFS works great for me!

It's name is "Burrito"

The low down and dirty:

Really nice, RUST FREE truck that I traded a 97 Land Cruiser for a few years ago. 218,000 miles on the 22re. Starts right up and goes down the road just fine. All accessories work, including the AC. Even the little button that let's you start the truck without the clutch depressed works fine. Transmission shifts effortlessly. Wiring harness is not butchered except for the addition of a cruise control that I cannot figure out how to use.

Xtra cab is really nice. I'm 6'2" and I do not have the seats as far back as they will go. Shaquille O'Neil could drive this thing with no issues. Interior is in great shape for the age of the truck. Seat is worn a bit but no tears or anything. Cover on the dash. Carpet is all there as is the headliner.

Recently replaced the starter. When I first got the truck I replaced the belts and the water pump with an OE Aisin pump.

Want to sell it because I got another Land Cruiser and I don't need it any more.

What Burrito needs:

It has an exhaust leak where the header meets the manifold. I have the little doughnut gaskets and it is an easy fix. Literally 1 hour with the appropriately sized socket wrench and about 24" of extensions.

Timing chain is a little rattley. I actually have GOOD parts to make the swap including a timing chain kit from 22re Performance. Also have an Aisin oil pump (while you are there...) and a new timing cover just in case the old one is a little scarred.

If I were going to keep it, I would also replace the front bronze spindle bushings. It does sounds like they are wearing out. It's only noticeable when the hubs are locked (duh)! I have only used four wheel drive once, last year when we had some ice here in the DFW. I will tell you that this thing went EVERYWHERE when most people were sitting in their houses, crying like little babies, skeered to go outside. I figured the light back end of the truck would be an issue but it wasn't.

Mr. T knows how to design a truck!

I do not regularly drive the truck. Did take some trash down to the dump last week and she fired up immediately after sitting for a month.

Price is $5,000 but there is some room. Will come with a bunch of Toyota tune up parts (plugs, wires, rotor, cap, etc.

73 three isn't a bad year. Some markets got a early version four speed. While we didn't get that four speed the floor and frame changed that year so that one could just bolt in. Not a big deal changing to disc brakes up front and no rear axle came stock with disc brakes so no harder then any other FJ40. The real question is does it have any rust. The most important thing when dealing with a FJ40. Because it doesn't have title I won't pay more then what I figure I could part it for and put some money in my pocket. Live auction they are hoping people will get caught up and pay more then would if they had some time to think about. If you go set the price you would pay and walk away if it goes over that price.

PS: I've had a 73 FJ40 for close to twenty-two years that I've never even started the engine. It was off the road for at least five years before that. Still rather deal with replacing all the seals and flushing everything out then deal with rust.
