I called UPS and literally tracked down the delivery van about 3 miles from my house and stopped him. Got the parts, truck is up and running.

1PM on the day of departure...whew!!

See you all tonight!

Yeah, that whole fixed rear axle thing...nevermind :)

Broke both sides in the rear....whoopsie! :)

How long did that last? About 28 hrs.

Well, I am ordering the chromoly axles on Monday. I have a slide hammer for the stuck side and the other side is a non-issue. I have inspected everything and so far:

1. Rear left, broken, easily extracted.
2. Rear right, tweaked splines, slide hammer will be attempted. Plan B is to cry in my beer and find a plasma cutter.
3. Front flange shows a leak, dropping driveshaft to inspect seal, etc. No play in the driveshaft so dunno.
4. Oil leak in engine is new, not sure on how fast, where, etc. Looks like it is on the front of the engine.

I am degreasing/cleaning today so it will be dry and easier to trace everything down. The teardown will begin in earnest this week.

May good fortune reward your efforts

How are you going to "fish" out the remaining left rear? Magnet?
Keep us posted. Good luck!
Ohm....cruiser,cruiser,cruiser....Ohm

Yes, a magnet. That is not the concern. The right rear is the scary part. I can't budge it. UUUUGH

It's cool that this thread has turned into a fix detail as opposed the bone headed UPS driver saga. Kind of a natural segway it seems since the parts he delivered were to fix what you broke again - or am I off base on that one?

It would be awesome Dan if you kept a loose journal here with updates as the fix progresses. Pics would be cool too but I'm realistic. I know how things get when it's crunch time working on fixes - taking / posting pictures is the lowest priority.

Anyway, being a fellow 80 owner, I am familiar with the typical, more common break points on the truck but this one is new to me. I've been following in your threads and have been learning a lot with regards to breaking the axle like you did.

Either way, good luck and thanks for the education!

 I just found the thread in the 80 section as well. I had not read it since your first post. Maybe that's the place to document the repair...

Well, like I said, I'll stay tuned so that if / when it happens to me, I am not at a complete loss.

Either way, good luck!!

Still trying to figure out a way to get the short side out without cutting the housing.

Dan that one has me puzzled also. I just don't see how you could get it out. With the splines stripped like that it will make it allmost impossible. The only way I can figure out how is to try to snap it off. When in 2wd (can yours just be put in 2wd) does the rear axle still turn. Is it possible to just try to strip the axle all the way out and try to snap it off. I'm thinking if the splines are stipped maybe it will at as a weak point.

Otherwise I would take a cut off wheel and cut a large enough hole to where you can get a plasma torch in it. Another thought is to cut a small enough slot with a cutoff saw and stick the blade of a sawzaw in there and cut it off. That might make a small enough hole to where it would be easy to weld back.

Maybe Dan just needs to mod it to a rear diff plate cover.
If that slide hammer doesn't get it out, then cutting the housing
for access seems the only choice. That or maybe breaking it some way
or other. Jack it up.....rev it up and drive off the jack? J/K...
Problem with breaking the right one is the thing will probably break
at the splines, leaving an end inside that you still might not be able to extract.

I think I have clearance on the PS from the carrier.

If I can get the DS out I should be able to pull the third.

Worst case is that I run the short side until it breaks if I can't pull the third. I will carry the new high strength axle in the spares.
