Can't equate M with TRD at all, don't mean anything close to the same thing. One is an performance sub brand, one is an add on parts brand.

M recognition and what it means is just like AMG in that the performance is real and tangible technically, visually and audibly in the cars that wear the badge (real not fake off Ebay). The cars are wholly different then their normal counterparts with handbuilt engines, and upgraded vehicle systems to coordinate for up level performance. When one sees one of these vehicles a muttering of "cool" comes under breath as one eyes the vehicle and wonders the price point versus performance level.

TRD/TRD Pro is just branding badges on a truck, parts upgrades or wheels. There is no hand made engine spec'd over normal, no suspension performance spec over normal, no weight reduction spec'd over normal anyone could really see/hear/notice what looking at these trucks. Sure there are catalogs (i.e. like aftermarket parts) for TRD/TRD Pro, but they aren't sub performance brands like M or AMG, they are just upgrade parts at this point.

Apparently the tongue smiley face doesn't mean 'joking' in Georgia.

I've been working on BMWs for decades, I'm aware of the history. That said, the M brand and nameplate is certainly a diluted since they started adding it to everything in the form of "M-Sport" trims. In that respect, the M-Sport and TRD (the base TRD) are essentially the same idea. TRD Pro actually adds a level of performance.

Also, TRD Pro does have suspension performance over non-Pro. Significantly so.

I’ve been thinking about wrapping the roof in white as my black/black gets hot in the Southern California sun. That doesn’t look half bad.

I’ll would also go for that bumper with integrated winch. Anyone have a part number?

Mercedes has diluted the AMG brand in the same way that BMW has diluted the M brand with M-sport. You can get AMG styling packages on non-AMG sedans. The AMG C-43 doesn’t have a true AMG engine.

Yes, there are still hardcore AMG and M models, but both brands also offer watered down models that water down the brand image.

TRD, M, AMG are cash cows.

I would still like to see some limited edition 200s or even a trd package.

Everyone wants something special. So they can feel different to stand out from the rest of the crowd. Some just like the image of special. Others want the substance. There's no right or wrong here, just different.

No one knows that better than Porsche and the 24 variants of the 911. All cash cows but also all very niche in volume. To say one is watered down relative to the next misses the point.

They are each developed to a different target audience. Tailored to fit whatever particular charter and niche. No single 911 would satisfy the whole spectrum of buyers. A 911 "base" comes to mind, even though it's a friggen 911! Oh, and there's very much a pecking order, to which conceited owners will thumb their noses when sizing each other up at an intersection.

I digress, we're very much a (growing?) niche. If the market warranted a more serious variant, Toyota would absolutely produce it. Point is, as much as we want it to be, a $80-90k+ TRD Pro Land Cruiser is only a blip on Toyota's radar as a legitimate business case.

Hah, LX F?

Hah, LX F?

Now that would be interesting.

My point was lack of options for the US market 200 turns many into LX570 buyers. For example you can buy a LX570 without a 3rd row.

That fake stick on hood scoop has to be good for a few horsepower.

I've been lobbying with a full-court press. More on they later.

The stock tire size is too damn small!

I would've considered an LC with a TRD Pro package if it had existed and at a minimum consisted of:
  • 33" KO2 and RWs
  • Fox or Biltstein 2" lift
  • 4.30 gears
An e-locker, better skids, etc would've been nice but not necessarily required. Availability of the TRD supercharger (without potentially voiding the warranty) would've been a bonus.

In the end I'm happy doing the mods myself and ending up with larger tires, more suspension adjustments, and (eventually) taller gears. But it would've got me into the tire/wheel/lift club out the gate, and I would've preferred to start with "Toyota-approved" parts which didn't put certain aspects of the vehicle warranty into question, at least until I'm past the 100k mark.

^^^ THIS!!!!

4.30s are top of the list for me, then an e-locker. There are plenty of options for skids and lift via aftermarket.

4.88s are on the top of the list for me. But then I'm on 34s and pulling 6000# of brick wall behind me regularly.

I'm on "33" KO2s and only really pull my turtleback. My tundra had 4.30s and felt great on the same tire/wheel combo. I'd be happy with that.
