... assuming the winter wonderland people don't have their way tomorrow. There's a thread near the top on the expeditions/trails board.

In other news, I have steering now, so my rustbucket drives around the yard without being an E-ticket ride. I'll drive it to work a few times over the next couple of weeks and see what else rattles itself apart.

For everyone in Sacramento, there is a meeting today at 12:30pm in Rancho Cordova about the potential closing of the Rubicon by the Water Quality Control Board.

Thanks for posting the link Ducks. Very sensitive area for sure.

wagon4wd hope you are able to work out the bugs!

Post up your rear storage securing methods. I have done a few things in the past for milder trails but would like to see your solutions.

Also any need for spare hubs or hub parts? My neighbor showed up yesterday with a box of "trash" and there were a pair of Asian hubs in the box left over from his "Warn upgrade"!!!

It seems to be tooling around fine. I forgot how much I liked driving the stupid thing. The frame rust, however, seems to be a temporary deal breaker. We'll see how things go, but it looks like the 60 might be out. I'd take the XJ (which is ready to go), but I think I'd get lynched for taking a jeep on a TLCA event. Even if I did bring pictures of the 60 along.

If you have a full float, you'll probably want spare hub stuff for the rear. Either way, hub stuff is fairly small. If your tires are big enough to justify SOA, it's probably not a bad idea to squirrel one away somewhere. Don't they become the weak link after the 30 spline upgrade in the front?

I'm in!!!! gonna be fun! I'll be "working" the Medical committee but plan on running with the wags!:steer:

cool another wagon and another medic!

what kind of crawl ratio are you getting with that toybox and auto?

Clint

lets just say it is friggin' silly slow...

not auto though. it is the NV4500 5 speed with an early 6.34 1st gear

about 160:1 and i did not even go with the 4.7 toy box. i went 2.28 and i really cannot immagine ever needing to go any slower...but i could put the 4.7 gears in if i ever want. although pretty sure i don't

looking forward to meeting you guys! I just live right down the road from the 'Con

was digging through some camping supplies for something somewhat related and tripped over a can of bear mace. I got to thinking...

I know there's bears up there because I used to backpack (before I got fat and lazy). Perhaps this is a question about being over prepared, but are bears a problem with an event as large as rubithon? I'll happily bring the bear mace along if it's appropriate. I think I'll leave the electric fence supplies at home. They are only black bears, after all.

Some bears in Yosemite will march into civilization to steal an air freshener, but some bears in the sierras will be scared away with a strong sneeze.

Most bears in the area have been poached long ago.

In my 20+ years of hiking in the area I have seen only three bears and they were all at the loon Lake Canpground.

IMO there are way to many people in the area and this keeps the bears away. And they are brown bears anyway. I would worry more about meat bees and mosquitos.

We Californians shot off all the brown bears years ago, all that's left are black bears. Cool though, I won't worry so much.

In other news, I got my registration info in the mail. Noticed there was no mention in the requirements in the mail about a WAG setup, but I know better. Got a good laugh about the part of the tech inspection that requires the engine to stall with brakes applied in a certain gear. Can't wait to see how this will work on a 62 or 80

Still messing with rust, it's not looking good :bang:

weather report?

For those out of towners that were skeptical of Pighead's "be prepared for everything from hail to 120 degree heat" weather forecast, he's not far off.

My house faces north, and looking north towards the rubicon is a lightning storm of epic proportions. Fireworks shows have nothing on this thing. The weather service is calling for rain in auburn, and it rained at my place (about the same distance from 50 the other direction as auburn), so there's likely rain in that area as well. The current storm is supposed to continue through the weekend.

But be sunny the week following.

So, be prepared for everything, like he suggests. Though apparently, add lightning to the list of things to be prepared for. How does one prepare for lightning? Easy. Tripod, bulb, and an old school, manual focus film camera.

Wagon4wd........ A little burdie told me you gave up on the 60 and are taking the X Gay. I have a lot of finishing to do on the 4BT 80 and you still have time to get the 60 ready....... Start NOW!!!!! Stop working on the HEEP and get the 60 ready. NO EXCUSES :)

Great news, I got my portable shatter in the mail today. To keep this tech, can someone tell me how I operate such a contraption:hmm:

Leaving monday:bounce::bounce2: Cant wait to get nervous and stressed on wed morning. Wife and I will be in a white wagon. Safe travels everyone.

If you got a PETT, we can have a demonstration at Loon Lake. Well, at least a partial demonstration. A dry run so to speak.:D

Don't forget the WAAG bags.

I'm leaving this Saturday and can't wait.

You heard right. The frame behind the axle resembles a homemade pie crust, and each portion of the frame that is pie crust has a five to ten degree tilt with the bottom of the frame pointing away from the north-south centerline of the vehicle. While I was totally ready to throw a set of 33s on it and see how much bondo I could scrape off in the rock gardens, it's really just NOT a good idea to take it on a trail like the rubicon without that fixed.

It would have probably taken me two months of ridiculously hard work (drilling rivets on what's left of the frame sounds like lots of fun) to get it safe enough to drag over 12 miles of rock gardens. Leaving work sending me out of town most weekends since then for site conversions, I really think two months of my time is better spent throwing that body and frame away and doing a driveline transplant on a 60 that has good body and frame, but a dead engine.

So I'll be taking the cherokee. Well, one of the five of them. It was basically ready to go save dealing with the stupid idea of how XJs stash spare tires and one leaky wheel cylinder (which was solved in a rather convoluted way). I have enough spare parts for it to build another jeep, and that's without taking parts off the jeep that's in pieces, so it should do okay. I'll be looking at what people have done to their 60s while on the trail - since I'll be essentially starting over, I'm totally open for ideas. Well, ideas that don't involve someone with a boat engine and 37s using the poor XJ as an RTI ramp

The 60 still lives and I really like driving it, enough so that I have a hard time picking up the torch to cut it up. If I get some film developed, I'll bring a picture of her along and tip a little of the forty out for her, even though she's not quite dead just yet.

Hm. Even if you're fully clothed, the idea of a demonstration of how a toilet works seems a little disturbing.

All Right.... You can take the X Gay but don't park it too close to my rig as I don't want my rig to get any diseases..... See you there!

last 3 things on the list:

finish weld on left front shock tower

burn in new rear spring perches

finish last 4 cuts and weld new rear bumper...

Are we there yet?

Clint

Just a few more days! I got as much done as I could so it should be fun.

Looking forward to meeting the Oregon dudes. I'm headed up the hill on Saturday and will run the trail backwards starting Sunday. See you guys at Loon Lake on Wednesday morning!
