Happy to be at the bridge!

At the top of Cadillac, I am third from the left.

The truck did great, no major issues and no body damage. But lots of things have ended up on the do before next year list.
Some of the things I want to do before next year are just because I want a more bomb proof set up. I will be part of the committee for the wagon run and I just don't want to hold up the group that I'm suppose to help lead.

Its been a little over one year since I did the monstaliner and I can't see any signs of it fading or failing. Like all new things, if I did it a second time It would look better but I'm happy with it. I"m really happy with it.

Hey, I met your dad at the Pleasanton Red Robin a couple weeks ago. He was in front of me in his 60 and I had to compliment him on it. Love his license plate as well. haha. Looks like you all had fun!

Yup, Pleasanton, was him for sure. And yes we had a blast, hard not to with that many good cruiser heads around.

In Preparation for the event that is Rubithon I went dual battery and installed a fridge. Oh and don't forget the solar!

Main components
Fridge: Dometic dual zone 65l.
Aux battery: optima blue top deep cycle.
Battery set up: Painless Kit.
Solar: Renogy Monocrystaline 100w folding panel.

When starting this I knew I wanted a box to go around the fridge. So I could keep the sun off of it and stuff the car full and still get into the fridge easily.

For this I used 1/2 inch birch ply and Simpson strong tie stair stringers with carriage bolts as connections. All found at home depot.

This side of the box goes against the wheel well and the "missing piece" is for easy access to unplug the fridge and run its cables through.

As you can see, some of the connectors went outside of the box, this was too clear the fridge slide inside the box.

Test fit.

She works.

The box came out better than I expected. With the slide out, the top door of the fridge rests just so against the gas strut of the hatch so you don't have to hold it while getting in the fridge. Also, it is tall enough inside the box to prop the lid open with a towel when the fridge is not being used but staying in the car, so you don't get any funky smells.

Here is the aux battery. The tray is from Slee offroad.

Primary battery and solenoid.

This is the in cab toggle for the solenoid connecting the two batteries. The red and green lights indicate what position you are in.

Here is a very useful thread on solar, very much worth the read.

i have that same panel, works killer, easy to set up and move around, and the foam case actually handles alot of contact and keeps it safe.
the bolts like to rattle loose, but finger tight is good to go and then just give it a quick reef once in a while. I have a laptop cable and lock and drilled a hole to secure it to something so it doesnt walk away.
Drew has a mod where he suggests you take the controller of the back of the panel and put it next to the battery. Will require using the killer plugs and disconnects that Tom has, but you can see it in action on his rig. Pretty slick. I like it because it's plug n play and forget about it.

works great for taking it over to someones elses camp.

Looking good Justin and the big cut out in your box will help keep air circulating to the coils of the fridge. I'd like to check it out in person next weekend.

What's the rationale for the Painless dual battery system? I don't know a ton about it, but curious why you chose it in particular and especially if you know the self consumption of it. And their website is quite stingy with the details!

I'm bringing my panels to Wentworth, but since the camp is in the trees, I'm not sure how much use it will be.

Yeah the panel is super versatile, and I really like the case. Currently I have the charge controller at the panel like it comes. In the future I will get one at the battery. I got rid of the alligator clamps and hooked up an extension cord with power poles to the battery, I also have a lot more room to move it around now. But I kept the clamps and threw a power pole on them so i could easily charge another rig.

Remind me to show you where my charge controller is now. It's something you could consider if you have an interior fuse panel (or even if you don't!)

And power poles = all good.

Yes the extra space in the box will help it breathe better. This fridge actually has the compressor at the front (so near the open side of the box) so it should vent very well.

The Painless dual battery set up controls how the batteries are connected via a solenoid. I have three positions to choose from.
The green position starts the car with the main battery only, but will connect the two, when the car gets going, so the aux battery gets charge when car is on.
Middle position has no light and means batteries are not going to be connected at all.
The red position Means Both batteries are totally hooked up regardless if the car s on or off.
That being said, it lives in the green position. If I drain the main, for some unforeseen reason, I flip to red and start car with both batteries.

I can show you how it's wired up at Wentworth.

Cool. I was wondering what happens if you are charging the "house battery" with solar. Will the painless relay sense this charge voltage and also charge the starting battery once the house battery is fully charged? Like I said, their website contains essentially no useful information!

I offered your dad a battery for you to use in your system, but it looks like you got it covered with the blue top. Despite what people say, I got great service from the 1 Blue top I used. I think it finally gave up after 7 years.

I guess when the aux battery is full I could keep the solar on the aux and flip the system to red and the batteries would try to even out. But I don't know if that would be healthy for the system. @MountNGoat ?

And yes my dad extended the offer but I was just super set on getting it done and already budgeted for it. @JohnnyOshow22 is trying to bring a friends fridge on Rubithon this year, he might be interested. My dad and I could easily take turns charging it for him.
