I test drove a clean, well kept '92 stock TLC today. I was very impressed with the way the owner had kept the truck - in the past few weeks I've seen a good number of LCs all of which were beaten, abused and neglected. This was really a first clean truck I've seen since starting the search few weeks ago.

My impressions of the truck were that it was clean, very few dings or scratches - most of which I can just live with. The color was gold with brown interior (cloth). 127K on the clock with the engine/transmission replaced (currently at 55K). The engine appears to run pretty well. Driving the truck on the highway was fine but heading up into the hills a bit with three people the car was really doggy - I had to floor it all they way to keep it there and it would constantly down-shift and rev up to a decent speed then down shift only to start the same cycle over again 20 sec later - kind of annoying.

The knuckles had a little grease on them - though they weren't visibly leaking. Tires were fairly new - though there were some 'no brand name' tire with pretty decent tread on them - stock size I believe. The current owner told me that he had to replace the starter and a new battery recently, Mobil 1 oil from the beginning. The car has no visible rust anywhere - the owner told me he had is shipped by his family from Alabama (family dealership there).

The H/L shifter worked fine - did a little wheeling on the dirt roads and it worked fine in all gears though the Diff Lock refused to engage in High for whatever reason - the factory switch in the dash. There was no clicking sounds when turning the wheel hard L to R even in Low - felt like a real 'tank' - it was a real great feeling... made me grinn :D

The brake pedal was depressed somewhat - maybe I'm not used ot it but comparing it to other LCs I drove this week and last it seems like the brakes could use new pads. There was no shaking during braking neither gentle nor firm.

Bad luck for the seller - the radiator sprung a minor leak as he pulled into the parking lot to show the car.

Overall I liked the car but I still have reservations about the constant downshifts and hard acceleration going uphill - that's really the only thing that concerns me about the car. Overall it's in a great shape and I would consider making an offer.

His asking price is $6750 - I think a fair offer may be $4500 - up to $5500 .... IF I can convince myself that I can live with the dogginess of this ride...

Just don't know still on the fence about it. I drove a heavily neglected '94 and '96 same afternoon and the cars both felt a LOT more responsive with that 1FZ engine... so I'm kind of lost at what to do about it...

I would keep looking for a FZJ80, if it were me. You will want to keep it forever, so get what you really want, even if it takes a while. Looks pretty nice for a FJ80 though.

My red flag: Both engine and tranny replaced at that low of mileage. 1 of 2 things.
1. This is true, therefore run. If an owner has killed both the tranny and engine in one of these things, that vehicle has been severely neglected everywhere else.
2. This is false, therefore run. Some people will tell you that it has a new motor, tranny, whatever just to sell the things. Don't purchase from liars.

When I drove my FJ62 (3FE engine) from Minneapolis to Chama, NM., it had the same issues with the mountain grades. I think that's a typical and therefore normal problem with that engine. You might want to look at a later year truck with the 1FZ engine. Personally, I don't mind the FJ80's or the 3FE engines. However, the price on that one seems a bit high. :cheers:Ned

Yeah, I already told him this morning that I had a chance to think about it overnight and won't be extending the offer afterall.

It's frustrating that the local dealers have such nice vehicles - like this one, but they are cocky as h$&& and I refuse to deal with them - plus they want waaay too much - and try to snow you:
Super nice 1 owner 1993 Toyota Land Cruiser 4x4 3rd row 60 pics!

This other one is nice too but not for $8K that he wants:
1994 TOYOTA LANDCRUISER

Oh well - I'll quit crying on your shoulder and shut up and keep looking now ;)

I agree with the previous comments about RUN! I'm in your area and looked for months before I pulled the trigger on a lx450 that had a great maintenance history. I saw plenty of good looking trucks but they had too many miles or too expensive or unknown histories. Just hold out you'll find one.

X3....

I love my 95. The 1FZ is great. I have plenty of power for all the trail riding I need. A buddy of mine has the 3FE and he likes it but after driving his and mine I still like mine much better.

have you expanded your search to outside of Denver? i just picked up my '94 from a family in Colo Springs. All stock, lockers, 157k miles.

Wow... what a find. I wonder if it was the green one in Briargate near CS that I was going to look at this past weekend... :)

Yeah, I've been looking in the entire state of CO on CL, AutoTrader and cars.com - I just missed a really nice one in Monument - couldn't go to see it last night and it was sold by this morning... dang it.

The dealers have few nice cars - they are just too expensive for my taste... This is what I want - but he wants $7,995!

...guess I just got to dig deep and wait.

sorry, that was the one I bought. it's not perfect but it's something I can work with. I also looked at the white '95 in Falcon - it was rough... really rough. but he is asking $4500 for it and he retrofitted locking axles from a lx450 into it. I just couldn't do 260k miles on the rest of the truck. I have his contact info if you want it. I think he still has it for sale but no longer listed on craigslist. I also have pics I can email.

Yeah that one is way to much i just picks up a very mint fl truck for 7200 almost all base line done and 94k milesu, i would consider looking at areas where your friends live in other parts of the country and if you find one you could make a trip out of it. Thats what i did. Shipping from fl to boston was 400 even by the way way cheaper than driving!

Yes, those prices are a tad high in my mind. But this is coming from someone who paid under $3k for my FJ80. Sadly the radiator would make me want to run away from that 92 quickly. Probably aftermarket and I wouldnt mind if the dealer would drop the price to make it worth your time. But, even though I love my '91 3FE, I wouldn't mind much for factory lockers and ODBII.
