Yes, BUT there are RCA video and sound jacks if someone wanted to figure it out they could. I head unit can play videos from the front. I know with kids rear screens are useful. My kids are in their 30's so not a factor for me :)

I know my nephew and grandkids have Ipads and they just do their own thing in the back seat

Yes I am old

I'm assuming you lose rear DVD entertainment system control with these?
I believe so. It may be possible to still send video to the read DVD screen as there is an audio/video output harness. I'm eyeing the rear screen as a space to put something useful in.

I hear ya, I just have little ones so that screen is very useful to me

I need someone to 3D print a cover for the ceiling that we can retrofit. It would need to fit the existing lights, but otherwise just be a plastic cover for the ceiling DVD player. If I could score that I’d sell the rear DVD screen on eBay and pay for the Tesla unit

What I prefer instead of using carplay or android auto is to just turn on hotspot on my phone, and download the apps I want directly onto the head unit. That way I can leave my phone alone and use the head unit touchscreen for it all.

I've had sort of mixed results doing that with the EC Offroad module (the one that works with the factory display) instead of CarPlay. The upside is that you get the full functionality apps, the downside is that the controls tend to be far less driving friendly (smaller buttons and generally requiring more concentration to use them). Having a larger screen rather than the factory screen would mitigate the downsides.

Using the hotspot on an iPhone can be an exercise in frustration as it will not automatically connect to something like these head units. Using an Android phone or a dedicated hotspot solves this and, at least with the EC Offroad interface I'm currently using, allows simultaneous use of Internet on the Android unit and CarPlay.

I contacted EC Offroad over the weekend with a few questions about my interface module (that works with the factory display), their current Tesla style unit, and asking if they anticipate newer Tesla style units (updated hardware, etc.) for the 200 series moving forward. As usual, they sort of kind of answered most of the questions :).

I asked about specifics on what the bottom left and right control knobs do on the current Tesla style unit: "The bottom left knob does AC fan speed, The right knob does in our case passenger AC but your case driver side master AC." This might be problematic when my dad or mom are passengers as they will inevitably be difficult to train to NOT touch the knob on the right :). It would be really cool if the knobs were configurable and came with several label options (or no labels) so you could use the left / right knobs for driver / passenger temp or use them for fan speed / driver temp, etc.

I asked if they had a video or a series of still photos showing the HVAC controls and they said they don't currently have one available to do that with.

Their reply regarding newer Tesla style units was: "We are working on a new 13.6 unit but still a few months away."

I've been looking around at Tesla style options that are compatible with my 2020 and it looks like, in general, the options are compatible with 2016 and newer LC's. What I've found is:

EC Offroad (obviously):

Belsee:

ZWNAV:
Amazon product ASIN B08Z7CKGMC
The ZWNAV looks like it's pretty much identical to the EC Offroad unit, but at a much lower price.

The aliexpress pricing of the ZWNAV may be deceptively good as it doesn't appear to include support for the factory 360 camera. The ZWNAV products on the Amazon link, at a higher price, specifically mention support for the factory 360 camera.

@kcjaz - looking at your other thread where you posted some photos showing the install, it looks like the EC Offroad Tesla head unit comes with a Canbus adapter box AND a separate parking assist decoder box - is that correct? If so, this may be where EC Offroad is providing value for the extra cost versus buying the ZWNAV products. Even though EC Offroad hasn't been good in my experience at answering questions fully or answering all questions when multiple questions are asked in a single email, answers can usually be obtained after a few back and forth emails and there's no language barrier to deal with.

I think I'll see if I can contact ZWNAV to get some clarification on camera support from the various sources, but it may just make sense to sit tight for a few months and see what EC Offroad's next version brings. I don't have a problem paying the extra money for EC Offroad if they offer extra functionality, but I don't really want to pay more than double for the exact same thing.

Yes the EC Offroad unit comes with the two control boxes. That is one of the reasons I went with the EC off-road. I couldn’t tell exactly for sure what pieces or parts were missing from the other companies that I would have to figure out later or once I got the unit. I also thought at the time I made my decision that the EC off-road firmware might be a little more battle tested in Land Cruisers. But now that I have it I am not too sure this is the really case. At least when I ask a bunch of detailed questions I do not get the impression that they are heavily into the programming of these units. It is nothing like the Phoenix auto Facebook group stuff done by Sergey. I agree that they are generally helpful kinda sorta.

I suspect I’m going to end up getting a separate hotspot or it will just drive me nuts. The thing I like about Apple CarPlay is that it automatically connects the iPhone and I don’t have to do anything. Though I wish it would just keep playing the song that was being played when I shut the car off or last played on my phone. I can’t find a setting to make it do that I have to manually hit play again and select a song or playlist. Using the Wi-Fi only works well except that you have to manually connect it every time you hop in the car which is annoying. And so the solution to my first world problem will likely be another device connected to my cell plan.

At this point I am pretty happy with the unit. I think if I had gone with the cheaper versions of it I would have more time into figuring it out and then having to get some pieces parts to make it all work. That said I affectively have spent about $1000 more than I probably needed to. That’s a lot.

Thanks for your honest evaluation. I've been on the fence about upgrading the stock head unit on my 2020 LC200 and I think I'm going to wait until someone's Tesla style unit is bug free (market tested). I don't have the time or patience to deal with it. I emailed EC Offroad asking several questions and they answered one in a few words. Almost like they don't care or maybe don't have the answers, Not impressed at all with their customer service for a $2000.00 unit

Regarding EC Offroad's involvement in the programming, what I've been able to piece together is that they have some input on some of the default settings and features (such as automatically starting CarPlay on the newer version of the module that I have), but that's about it. Inclusion of the 2 control boxes may be another place where they had input to ensure as much of the factory camera functionality as possible remains after the swap. I really wish that Phoenix had something for our LC's as they would most likely be the best option. They definitely are not software developers or anything like that - they're car audio installers selling a relatively complicated product and want to have at least a few special features to attempt to make their product the compelling choice. I think their business model is geared more towards having a shop do the installs rather than DIYers, which most likely results in fewer questions most of the time. So they seem a bit befuddled dealing with those of us crazy enough to DIY :).

You mentioned getting CarPlay to start playing the song you left on. In my experience, that is generally an app specific thing and some of the apps are buggy. For example, the SiriusXM will sometimes continue where I left off and sometimes make me select a station to listen to again - I haven't figured out if there's any sort of pattern to it other than perhaps starting out with a weak cell signal is more likely to result in having to select a station again. IIRC, the default iPhone music app is good about continuing from where I left off. This is obviously with my interface module, not the Tesla head unit, but this should be an iPhone / CarPlay thing rather than anything related to the head unit.

Yeah, the EC Offroad guys are helpful, ultimately, but it often takes too many round trips feeling like you're being a PITA asking the same questions over and over until you get answers for everything you asked. I'm currently on round 2 of the questions I asked over the weekend.

I think I'll attempt to contact ZWNAV to see what I can find out. I'm pretty well convinced they're either the OEM that EC Offroad uses or they're both using the same OEM.

Thanks boss, I am building a website this month so I can get organized. Mud is going to have a decent section!

I’m not sure what ceiling DVD player? Is yours different than my 08? @linuxgod if you’re referring to where the drop-down sunglasses holder are on mine, I planned on adding a switchbox there similar to what others have done. Or are we talking about different area?

Does your 08 have rear entertainment? My 2013 does. If so I'm referring to the DVD player mounted in the ceiling that those in the rear seats can see. It looks like this.

You wouldn't believe how much Toyota charges for this replacement 480p DVD screen... enough to buy multiple Tesla navigation units.

I suspect you know this, but newer models have screens on the back of the front seat headrests, which is probably what @SharpeCat was expecting.

Someone else already did a ton of legwork to figure out another option:

I'm probably going to go with the same unit he went with. Seems like there is very minimal compromise there and a pretty significant price savings.

Yep. I know Trekboxx has a cover available for those, too.

I'm not set on doing the Tesla screen yet. But as long as I have a rear DVD player the OCD part of me would want it to work (even though my kids have moved on to iPhones and don't use it anymore). Getting rid of the screen would help my OCD. Also I don't know what these sell for used, but the screen alone is $5k+ at a dealer so I suspect it would be easy to recoup at least part if not all of the Tesla unit cost by selling the old rear screen on ebay.

Yeah, I get the OCD aspect of it - it would also bug me to have a screen there that doesn't do anything. Which makes me glad that I purchased a HE without 2nd row entertainment. $5K for that part is nuts. I realize the mounting bezel part of it is custom, but there shouldn't be anything special about the screen that comes close to justifying that price. I have a hunch a lot of the price on parts like these is for the inventory side of the operation as they probably don't get replaced very often, but sort of kind of have to have the part available.

Heh, the only option with the 2013 was exterior color. Everyone got the RES.

Yes $5k is nuts. I'd be happy to trade mine for the cost of a Tesla-style unit and a 3D-printed ceiling cover (with space to move the ceiling lights) ;-)

If mine failed and I cared (which I don't) I'd pull it apart and try to source a replacement part of Aliexpress (which is what I did for the nav unit dvd player in my Acura... $65 vs $3000). FWIW the unit also includes the motor to lower and raise the screen and probably some other bits, but again if mine failed (and again if I cared, which now I don't) it seems like the worst case replacement scenario should be one of these which is 1/10th the cost...

I hear a Mud vendor is actively working to replace that drop screen with a tactical Molle mount with Starlink antenna, Ham radio interface, 2-giga-candlepower LED dome lights, and overlanding tissue dispenser.

Debuting at LCDC and available Fall 2022. Get out your checkbooks, boys.

(I'm just being silly, but it's actually not a bad idea. )

Add wet wipes and dog poo bags…. This will be awesome.

I have some DVD players in the headrest, if there's one on the ceiling I've missed it this entire time. And yes, those screens are very expensive and it's a shame I don't use mine; I plan on repurposing them later/maybe updating to 1080p. If anyone needs them let me know; for cost of ship and maybe a coffee XD.

Looking at that though, it seems very simple; the hard part is finding a buyer for the screen. Even harder would be to find something to put in its place that will repurpose your existing wiring, like a big switchbox? Or maybe a USB charging hub? I'll give it some thought and let me know if anyone has any ideas.
