Nice! 22 is fantastic. I never managed better than 19 in mine with turbo, 5 speed and 3:73s.

Where was yours from? Must be Victoria if it's that clean.

Josh

Does the turbo hurt the mileage? I would think it would make it better. Also the 5-speed should help on the highway right? What size of tire are you running?

33" tires. Turbo does help economy a bit but mostly I found it just gives more power for the same fuel use. My troopy in Australia was not turboed and for similar fuel economy. I've never been able to get very good economy with a 2H. Now with the 1hz in my father-in-law's HJ78, I seemed to average about 22 city or highway.
I would have liked that engine in my HJ47.

My troopy 2H engine is bone stock with the 4-speed but my tires are skinny Maxxis mud terrain 235/70/17 and I cruise no faster then 65 mph... also no roof rack only the the big bull bar on the front.

Maybe the skinnys really help the mileage?

I don't know, but with that fuel economy I wouldn't ask why-just enjoy it!

I'm hoping my fuel econony will be better once this rig is back on the road. I had the injectors rebuilt and the injection pump serviced. The shop that did the work said the injectors were spraying way too much fuel. I never really did a calculation on it's fuel economy but I could tell it was better than my FJ62, which I think averages about 14 MPG (at best).

I drilled a couple of holes and poured some POR 15 into the finished end caps on this upper rear door support piece. Sort of as a last ditch attempt to keep the rust out.
Now I'm cleaning up the fuel tank components and getting ready to re-install the tank and fuel lines. I cleaned up the fuel filler tube assembly and decided to paint it instead of leaving it bare. From the factory, it looks like there's a anodized coating, but after grinding it a bit, that coating is compromised, so that's why I primed and shot it black. The hard fuel line piece shown is in primer, not yet finished painting. These pieces won't be seen, but I'll know they're pretty.

HJ Rebuild

I'm tearing my HJ47 down too and, as you said... 35 years of crud. I noticed you painted the emergency brake housing black and silver. Is that some kind of special enamel or sealant? What would you recommend? Also, what kind of gaskets are you using, it looks like you cut them to shape?

That's clever, I like the idea of pouring the paint into the cross beam. I've done that with fish oil but never thought of doing it with paint....guess it's too late for me now with all the oil in there :)

Alaska, what is your rig?

Alaska, I'm using engine paint on most of these parts so they can take some heat and or caustic fluids. If I was wealthier, I'd powder coat that stuff.

All the gaskets I got from SOR or Cruiser Outfitters. I don't think I had to make any myself. Which gaskets were you talking about Alaska?

I have a fuel separator issue. That plastic piece that has 4 hoses coming into it from the fuel tank.
I can't find a picture of where it bolts on to the truck. My service manual doesn't show what it bolts to and l now wish I took a picture of it when I removed it. I ordered a new manual from Australia (digital version) and hope it has a more detailed description of this item and all the other little pieces. If anyone out there knows where this separator gets attached, let me know. There may be a bracket that it goes with, I'll start looking through all my brackets next.

Thanks,
I probably have a picture of that area, so I'll look at that spot tomorrow. I have the tank in position and didn't want to attach it until I knew where that separator went.

Yep, that's where it goes. It's funny, I kept looking everywhere under the truck and never looked in the cab. Thanks again !!

Thanks to all the help from you members , I think I have the tank in and the fuel separator piped correctly. That line coming off the check valve, I'm not remembering where that goes. I'd assume it goes to atmosphere as a vent ??? I really can't wait for the new body, chassis manual to arrive, but maybe that won't explain all these routings either.
Lesson learned, take more pictures on disassembly. I thought I was taking allot of shots, but now I'm understanding that some of these manuals aren't designed to show you how every single part goes back together. When you don't know for sure, take the picture before you take it apart!
This site and the guys who follow it have filled in the blank spots for me, over and over again. Thanks!

I do recall that one of the lines does 'go to nothing' but I can't remember exactly which one it is. I'll take a look at my truck tomorrow and let you know. I think you have it set up right though.

I'm pretty sure that is the petrol return line-not used in the diesel.

Josh

On my BJ42 I had the exact same issues re-installing this. On the 42 that last line pipes into the frame, not so much for fluid transfer but for venting I assume. I'll see if I can find a pic, I recall [before the days of google] memorising the FSM at Toyota and hunting down a BJ42 owner on the side of the road to check out his setup!
