Tearing down my HJ47 troopy

Started over on the reinforcing metal

I still need to seal the area, but the other piece was obviosly the wrong approach. I may weld it up, but probably a seam sealer would be just as good and easier.

First patch welded on the windshiel frame.

I'm hoping the bodyshop guru's can make these patches look straight. That body line that runs the perimeter of the frame is the issue. I'm trying to recreate that line but I'm not sure if it's close enough that the body filler can make it look right. I may not go any further until I show it to a good bodyshop expert.

I would think you could find someone with a trashed windshield frame that could whack out some sections from which you could cut exact replacement patches... then the lines/bends would be exact matches.

I'm sure I'm not the only addict on here that can't bear to throw anything away...

So far, not a whole lot of 40 series trucks down here in South Florida. I could be wrong. But this being a right hand drive truck, some 40 series stuff just won't work. I'm actually enjoying the welding practice. And I need practice for sure. I just ordered an air die grinder. (Gonna need a compressor too) So I'm planning on doing more repairs since I'm the cheapest welder I know. Well see, if I actually save a dime.

What type of grinder did you order?
I find the 2" air grinders the best for that kind of work.

Ingersoll Rand 301 general purpose angle grinder with a 2 inch backer pad. I have to get a suitable compressor now. Any suggestions?

2 HP Campbell Hausfeld 20 Gallon tank. 5.5 CFM @90 PSI. I hope this works for my die grinder. It's the best I can afford. We'll run it and hope for the best! It is oil fed and American made,,,,,

Shuild be enough for the 2".
Worst case you have to wait for the tank to fill in between but 20 gallon is enough to get some time in.

Lost Marbles hit it on the head I think. My old boy looked at me funny when he saw my 47 in the shed. All the one I've seen pre rebuild have rusted front clips and all the ones in paddocks are rusted relics well past the fixable stage.

Mine has a single leaf 1mm plate repair, with a 3mm plate behind the hinge for support. Just make sure you seal the daylights out of any double leaf metal, or it will definately rust. Primer or no. Sikaflex is the best sealent by far. Any steel vehicle built before electroplating will rust give half the chance.

Just keep it in the shed once finished

Another patch

Another day another welded patch. 2 more and the windshield frame is done. I've decided to use a bedliner coating on the bottom of the body. The guys at the body shop suggested it as an option and it saves some time and money in the process. After that, they'll paint the firewall in body color and it's going back on the frame. Then we'll bring it back to my house for a few months untill I get the rest of the items like the doors and rear window frames sorted. Still have the roof to contend with; which will be a Mutha #%&*@#!

Getting the body back on the frame

They picked up the chasis today and the body will be back on the frame Tuesday. The bottom is done and the firewall is in body color, (dune beige). We did the wheel wells in a black bedliner material leaving the middle bottom in body color.

Now the rest of the truck needs to be prepared, including doors, sides and miscellaneous other parts. We'll paint all of that stuff in one shoot hopefully. Nice to see something that almost looks like a truck!
