I'll be damned if I can find a picture to verify this, and I'm tired of searching. Is the tacoma rear differential centered, and if so can anyone see an obvious problem with swapping one into an FJ40?

We're starting to get back to work on a friend's 40 and he knows he wants a GM trans+tcase (rig already has a 292 from the PO and figures why not go all the way) but we haven't decided how to handle the centered output of a 205.

thanks.

Yes the rear axle has a center, not offset diff. The only issue I see is running two different diff types which may not be an issue to your friend.

All the so called mini toy trucks have centered rear, but The taoma is a wider than a 40.
You will need to be carefull as to what to buy.
As you matching the gear ratio front and back.
IMO, modifying the existing axle and centering the diff is not a big deal.
All I am saying is do more reading and look at all options.
It is posted on here somewhere.

yeah we're looking at several different options. it looks like the taco rear is 60" while the 40s are 55/56 (from the faq). not a huge deal. at this point it is a feasibility study more than anything.

For the centered cruiser hybric Vicm is talking about it's as simple as picking up a pre 85 housing and shafts for FJ40 width or pre 85 housing and 86 and up shafts for a 3 inch wider rear (matches a 60 front). You cut the outer tubes off the mini rear and sleeve them into the 40 housing. I have pics and Woody has a write up that I can't seem to find for some reason that describes the process.

The real early fj40's had centered differential in the rear. Just an odd angle on the drive shaft, but would not see why it is not possible since the early ones were like that from the factory. Might not be the best idea if you have a big v8 or plan to run it hard.
