I've finished my rebuild of the 8274, went to put the synthetic line on and the damn remote doesn't work. So I figure instead of a remote, I would rather have a nice set of switches inside to control the winch anyhow.

Anybody have any recommendations on what to use or where to get it. The rebuild thread shows the switched the guy used but I'd like to look at other options /styles. Anybody done this?

Have you thought of hardwiring to a dash controlled remote solenoid?

Flounder-Are you sure it's the remote? I am going through a similar process with an 8274 and it's the solenoid pack. All 4 of the solenoids have to work, or the remote will not function, and neither will the winch. The incab controller is just a way to trigger the solenoids without the remote, so they still have to work. Warn has discontinued the older solenoids as well-I spoke to them on the phone about it today. I think I have found a source of the older solenoids if you need them.

Poser was extremely helpful troubleshooting the winch controls-If you get in a jam, he is the man.

Flounder,
Check out these switches.

They look good and match the ARB switches.

How did the rebuild go? Did you buy the new moter from Warn and if so how much did you pay? I'm in the process of removing mine and will do a rebuild in a month or two...

Cheers

FWIW, my remote was simply corroded and loose, and would only work when it wanted to.

I would pull the remote apart first and check/clean up the wiring and tighten everything up. It was too easy.

Just my .02

I have used the Carling switches that Waytekwire.com sells for years, and before that, I used sealed Caterpillar toggles....one for on/off and one for in/out

Only problem with Waytek is that they are not going to sell you two switches and acctuators...

I have not ever used these folks but they have some very nice looking custom switch acctuators for their switches...

Just an FYI...

I would get the controller working so that you can run the winch out of the cab if you need to....there will be a need for it someday.

Good luck!

am I assuming correctly that the remotes on the usual winches are nothing more than just switches that are either on or off and control the solenoids with low current. IOW, something one could build with a couple of $2 radio shack switches and some wiring and a minimal knowledge of circuitry. IOOW, nothing weird proprietary with funky specs, right?

This is true for the one I had apart. However, it still needs the solenoids to be functional to trigger in this way.

What gauge wire should you run for an in-cab winch switch to an 8274?

ALF

Here is my WAG....14guage. Those wires carry virtually no current, so you don't need much. Inside the solenoid pack the wires look to be about 18 guage. With 14 you'll have overkill which is what we all want.

Sorry guys, I've been busy with work and completely forgot about this thread.

I'm sure it's the remote, the winch works when I just jumper the wires, hell I might have the remote wired wrong...the only thing I know about electric is that if you can't see it and it can kill you, it's electric. :flipoff2:

The rebuild was a piece of cake, I also used the pirate rebuild writeup as my guide but it's really simple. I bought a motor off ebay for like $75. It's a really common motor so shop around, don't pay the $400 price as these things are readily avaiable and parts are easy to find too and cheap at that. Just give them the part number and don't tell them it's for a winch.

If you have an specific questions about parts or rebuild kits let me know. It's a really simple process.

You wouldn't happen to have that part number would ya? I know the new Warn motor is 7536...but if there is something cheaper to look for than I will.

Cheers,
Matt

Had the same problem with my remote, plugpoint was rotten so i decided to install a new one and also have a in cab control.

A switch from a power window and a normal switch did it.
