Swearing in posts here on Tech (1 Viewer)

I've noticed that we have a lot of new members here, and appreciate the growth and enthusiasm. Naturally, with growth comes a bit of pain here and there and I'd like to address one that has increasingly come to my attention.

Many 4WD forums are characterized heavily by swearing and off color comments and pictures. In the past, this Tech forum has been reasonable and profanity has been fairly rare. I personally would like to keep it that way as more and more members are added.

I am a father and often have my son or daughter on my lap or happily lounging about while I'm on MUD and would like to keep it that way. So please try to avoid needlessly peppering your posts with swearing and profanity.

Doug, while i totally agree with you......i'm just kinda wondering, do your young kids really actually enjoy sitting there reading about how to fit 35 inch tires, warped rotors, what types of oil to run and pesky heater hoses?

Yea, my kids enjoy chat much better.

I like using the sideways terms like "freaking" as in "I can't get the freaking bolt off". I assume that's ok right?

-Ironically, my two year old occasionally sits on my lap when I surf IH8MUD waiting for the happy faces! ("Dada look that little guy!"). He goes nuts when he sees this one: !

I don't mind the , etc., but I personally don't care for the cursing.

User CP -> Edit Options -> Censor Type

Allows you to filter for words in the forum's dictionary that are deemed inappropriate.

I encourage your use of this as well as the comments you have already provided. I have little ones as well and use the above.

Under options uncheck "SHOW AVATARS"

Yes,

Go to User CP (Control Panel) and select "Edit options". Scroll down thru it and you will get to a spot where you can check-off boxes that will block avitars, sig lines and images if you like.

I agree with ya Doug........it doesn't bother me however(no kids and I have a foul mouth), but I am suprised when I see the F bomb used in tech.

No, actually this belongs in this forum since it is discussing improving the forum or at least making it more usable to more folks etc.

I get offcolor fairly regularly in chat, but try to keep the cuss-cuss out of tech. I slip though sometimes and hopefully if folks have their censors on it doesn't get picked up and viewed by kids. I do this based on comments folks like B made back on SOR.

In chat I believe all is fair, it's chat after all. I have though tried to keep all the momma stuff etc out of chat.

Just FYI, when I notice folks cussing a lot in tech, depending on the words used, I have occassionally dropped a pm to the person asking if they would mind finding a more appropriate phrase. Not all the time, and if they don't comply I don't edit it.

Keep one thing in mind. This is a web forum and we have seen adult spammers before. There are also words that the censor will not pick up. So there is always a chance that the kids will see or read something you'd wish they hadn't.

We are a tight knit group, and I think for the most part folks do their best to keep it pretty clean.

Just don't let the kids surf chat

I am sure I am guilty of it and I apologize for it. I come by my foul mouth honestly and there are only about 5 words I won't say in front of even my folks. I will watch myself in an effort to keep the quality of the board up.
