To make a long story short, the rear LSD on my 99 LX 470 blew up a few months ago. Instead of replacing it with another LSD, I had the shop I took it to install a locking rear axle from a 98 Land Cruiser. ABS wires and brake lines etc were swapped from the broken LSD axle to the new locking axle. They also installed the OEM diff lock switch and confirmed that my truck has the ECU, and that the ECU is connected to the wiring harness - probably because the rear locker was optional on the 98-99 Cygnus and Canada spec LX. However, the project isn't done yet because I'm missing the sub-section of the harness that goes from the rear of the truck to the actual actuator/locker.

I'm trying to figure out which one of the following options I should go with:
  1. Buying the sub harness by itself
  2. Buying the entire harness and removing the sub harness from it
  3. Making my own plug and play sub harness
  4. Taking it back to the shop who did the swap, who said they could source the OEM part needed and finish the job
I went on PartSouq to try and find out if there's a part number for the sub harness, but it seems like there's just a part number for the entire frame harness, and there are two variants for 1998. Unfortunately, I don't know when in 1998 the locking rear axle that is now on the truck was made, but I'm assuming I should go with the later frame harness (82164-60201) since that could have better compatibility with my 1999 vehicle.

I then looked up the part from Lexus directly, and it seems like the part has been superseded by 82164-60530, which I might be able to order from a Toyota/Lexus dealer for around $340.

However, before gambling hundreds of dollars on a whole harness when I just need like 4 wires (2 for the actuator, 2 for the sensor, is that right?), I wanted to see if there's any more information on the connectors, wires etc I would need to build a harness for this purpose myself. I'm not an electrical engineer by any means and don't really know how to read a wiring diagram, but I could probably swing it if I can figure out what I need to buy and assemble to get something that plugs right in.

Threads I've looked at:

Some good pictures on Amayama - seems like this is exactly what I need? Toyota 82164-60530 (8216460530) WIRE - https://www.amayama.com/en/part/toyota/8216460530

My main concern is ensuring that AHC still works with the harness installed. I seem to recall a thread here saying that there was some issue with the AHC harness and the locker harness on their truck, but they had already deleted the AHC anyway... spent a while trying to find it but couldn't. I know there are OE combinations of AHC + rear lockers out there and ideally that's the harness I would be buying.

Spent a few mins looking for a UK spec Land Cruiser Amazon VIN w/rear locker (since they came with AHC + optional rear diff lock), plugged it into PartSouq, and it seems like 82164-60201 is used there as well. Gonna sleep on it and probably pull the trigger on the revised part tomorrow.

It's interesting that the description mentions TEMS - seems like that's referring to part of AHC?

I put a factory locker into my JDM AHC 2000 earlier this year. I made up the harness myself. The wires connect into the chassis harness at an existing plug in the rear left corner of the body, so the connector has to be opened up and pins added. I see no reason why you couldn't buy the harness for the locker, depin the chassis harness connector and repin them into your current connector (or vice versa depending on which has more wires).

I’m going to swap in a factory locker into my 2000.

Based on my research, it seems like all that is needed is the additional wires in the rear frame harness. Pre 2002 LXs seem to have all the wiring in the main chassis loom already as there is no specific w/ locking diff dash or chassis harness. Only the rear frame harness.

I mapped out what I need and I think it’s 5 wires, two connector housings and some terminals and seals. I ordered the housings, and already have the terminals and seals. So like ndg, I am going to make my own harness.

I called several US Toyota/Lexus dealers about the part (82164-60530, harness for the rear locker with ABS and AHC) and it seems like none of them have it in stock, and there aren't any in the entire country according to the parts management system. I then called a few Canadian dealers, and one of them said that there was at least one unit in some warehouse, but it would take 2 weeks for the dealer to get it before, and cost like $650 CAD or something without shipping and tariffs.

Also called the shop that did the rear diff swap, and they said that they'd be installing a used US spec harness for the rear locker with ABS (and no AHC) and repinning it for at least $500, more if the wiring turned out to be complicated.

Impex doesn't have the part, so I think my best bet is to place an order with Amayama, gonna make a few more calls first though.

Please let me know how this goes. If you end up with any spare parts you need to get rid of after this project, I might be interested in buying them, haha.

Make your own pigtail. Al you need is two connector housings, a handful of Type 2.3II terminals and some wire. The details are in the EWD and Wire Harness Repair Manual. Both are in the Resources forum.

I studied all this in my locker swap (the junkyard truck's locker harness was woven into the frame and body like a tick) and ended up using the Trailgear locker wiring kit. Works in all drive modes and simple to install. I would have preferred a factory-looking solution, but gave up. Maybe you could part of their harness?

I thought about that, but I already have the OEM switch and all the other wiring. The Trail Gear harness ($272) is more expensive than the OEM one on Amayama, doesn't seem to have a built in breather, and I would have to rewire it to the OEM switch.

I submitted an order request from Amayama and they're estimating the shipped cost at $200, so it seems like the most cost effective option. Cruiser Outfitters said they could get it for me for $340 in a shorter timeframe. I'll go with them if Amayama cancels my order.

I would double check for the ECU by the way. Mine didn't have one fitted, it's marked 'computer, 4wheel drive' part number 89533-60090
