What are the best axles for a FJ?
Building a 45 project and trying to figure out through all the opinions what are the best axles. I am going to run 37-40 inchs of tire. I will be using it on road and in varied off road conditions. My goal is to overbuild and make it real hard to break. I will be runnig a Chevy 350. Please help. I would prefer experience over opinion.
Thanks:beer:

You talkin about upgrading the stock axles or making some new axles?

2.5 Rockwells.....

Maybe with some upgrades you could consider the Rockwell strong, but in a stock application with some 10.00-20s they pop (to be fair, it was a rather steep hill and the tank was full which meant an extra 2400 pounds).

ful floater with long fields super axles front and rear cromo set ! you are done.

Yep X2! Don't forget about the Marlin 6 stud knuckle upgrade for the front. Does PIG make 4340 FF shafts for the rear? I thought he only had SF 4340's?
ARP studs for the FF rear hubs too. I would run drive flanges on the front versus Aisin hubs just for reliability purposes.

These do not even exist.

I allways carry my flanges just in case if is necesary.

lonfeilds up front, ARP studs, 4130 hubs, 6 bolt knuckles (when they come out), 6 bolt steering arms from marlin as well.

step it up to the portal teks. I watched the shop truck at BFE last week and its like they are cheating.

There may be another aftermarket knuckle vendor in the future...

Rob, come on now. 406 Unimogs are ten times stronger than Rockwells.

I watched a guy with Rockwells break three (or four) inner axles on the "Filter" entering Upper Helldorado one year.

406 Unis are the way to go, but if you want to stay stock then yes 4340/4140 rear axles in a full floater set up and 30 spline 4340 longfield birfs and inner axles
would be the way to go. As strong as a Dana 60 front end if trussed.

If he was breaking rockwell shafts on UH he has a lot more peoblems.. I watched a fairly stock shafted Land Rover make it through there....

And that Statement is mostly true if you are comparing it to STOCK D60 shafts, and disregard the ring and pinion, tubing thickness, knuckle strength, etc..

Sunray engineering cromo housing, with a nodular iron ford 9" center secion with 40 spline 4340 axles and stubs, 1610 u-joints.

Rear cromo ford 9" housing, iwth a nodular iron ford 9" center section, full floating with 40 spline 4340 axles.
