Strange Question, Which american Inline 6 Cyl GAS Engine is a good swap into a LC?

None make any sense. It is like asking which Hooker would make a good wife. While some might look good, trying to actually make it happen you would quickly realize what a terrible idea it was. The 1FZ-FE is one of the most reliable straight sixes ever made. If more power is needed an American V8 (LS) is where it is at.....or just turbo the 1FZ.

You almost had me with the hooker wife, but then you threw in a LS ( lame sack ) , a Cummins is the only thing I would do, I know I am biased, but I drive one everyday and I love it :steer::moon:

Well the late 4.9L 300ci Ford I6 only made 260ft/lbs yes it was a peak torque at 2000rpms, but the 1FZ makes more than that everywhere from ~1200rpms on. 260ft/lbs is about 350Nm. So there is in my opinion, not a single thing the Ford 300 I6 could do better than the 1FZ. And cost of replacement would be a lot more than a rebuild or 1FZ out of a parts truck.

I'm gonna echo what the others have said about the Ford 4.9
I've only had a 3FE, 6BT and 350 TBI 80 series, but over the Toyota gas engine I6's I would go with the Ford I6 all day any day. Or if your a Toyota purist than a 4.7 V8, but the Ford I6 truck my dad had as a kid had great fuel mileage, pulled a loaded trailer well and never had an issue I can remember of.

And in terms of the 1FZ being reliable, not sure about that... PHH? Everyone here seems to love replacing every hose and part and PHH and rear heater delete, and any maintenance item they can think of. Call it preventative maintenance, but put a neglected 1FZ that just gets oil changes up against the 4.9 Ford and I'm not sure it would win.

Having said that, Ford also made some stinkers too, mod motors for example, and I'm a bit biased.

I have a '96 12 valve ready to go! Only 612k kms on it with a fresh clutch in the 4500NV.

Soooooo heavy though.

This is the stupidest post I’ve ever read. This makes me long for another cup holder thread.

Do not like the P-pump they don't fit as good as a VE and plenty of power, the weight is nothing to worry to worry, with the right springs and shocks you are fine . The P-pump get's in the way of inter cooler tubes, and with a NV4500 you may get a clearance issue. My cruiser with 6BT full tank of fuel and all 5 315 tires and wheels #5700

still always seems to me w/ bumper, winch etc etc -ALL over the front axle/steering...

That is why proper shocks and springs, I run a 3-4" lift and using heavy springs and some Doetsch Tech shocks I ordered the valving

6bt is not a good choice if your into more severe offroading because of the weight in my opinion. But for medium type wheeling and overlanding which a lot of 80 owners do it's fine. 80 itself isn't a great platform for more than that. I chose a LS over a 6bt because it was just going to be too loud for my daily driving needs. I want to pull up to a place and no one notice me. But I almost went 6bt. I could have gone that route. Finger was on the trigger. I also could have gone with turbo 1fz, but for me it gets old monitoring afr's all the time and filling with premium. Gas mileage isn't great, and 1fz parts aren't the easiest to get yet alone 80 parts in general. That's why I went the direction I went. Everyone has their reasons.

If i had to do an inline 6 I'd do a 4.9 (300ci) Ford.
I do hope to do a 5.3, or 6.0 LS swap in the next year or so though.

I have 25k miles on my 2005 Atlas i5/4L60e swap in my '92. ~70k on motor, 247k from DOB. Completed Aug.'14. Cruiser gets out of it's own way now. The old iron pig was such a dog. Though killer torque & bulletproof, it was painfully slow. I had a great opportunity to do the swap & went for it. It is 360# lighter & gets ~12/16 mpgs. Very happy with it & would do it all over again.

Does it have a custom oil pan?

full
Yes. Used a pan from same year H3 to clear the drive shaft & had to do a mod for a part inside the trans that hung a bit too low. More pics of this mod in my albums.

GM Atlas I-6. Nearly as good HP/torque as the 5.3 V8. The exhaust note, not so much. Not to mention the torque curve was pretty great IIRC. I was dead set on doing one for a few years, but ended up figuring if I was going through the trouble I was had to ditch the in-line gasser exhaust note.

It’s been done before. Search user “twotonic” on here. He also did the I-5 motor:hungover:

I didn't know all those 00's SUVs came with an i6, figured it was just an updated 4.3 vortec. Cool beans! 290hp and 270tq is no slouch out of a 4.2  I wonder how robust they are for FI? I do like how easily tunable most GMs seem to be.
