Unbolting the door from the hinges is the easiest. Just open it and you have easy access to those bolts.

It is best to have someone holding the door when you remove the last two bolts. Also be sure to disconnect the door wires from inside the vehicle (accessed by removing the kick panel) before removing the door.

I replaced mine without taking the fender off. You have to remove about 6-8 bolts in the wheel well and most importantly the bolt that connects the fender to the rocker panel. Fender will flex 3-4 inches without damaging it and you can get your hand in there and maneuver the antenna into place.

Should take about 2 hours total.

since we are talking antennas, i have two, one on each fender, which one is considered stock? drivers or passenger (RHD). same stock manual type....

Stock is on the same side as the steering wheel. More convenient for the driver to access.

Mine is on the left also. (LHD)

No fender removal.
No pain and suffering.
Protects your Cruiser from low flying birds.
Picks up radio stations from far far away. :)

Mine is on the driver side (and broken off). RHD.
yea me thinks due to snorkel, PO installed another on the pass side, as the snorkel head makes contact with the fully extended antenna. However, when redoing my radio, i used the RHD side and extended it 3/4 of the way and it works fine reception wise. So now i have 2, one just isnt used.

At risk of this being a really stupid question... how does that antenna send signal to the stereo? Wires running through engine bay > firewall > into stereo? Wireless?

I always thought those front mounted antenna were for CB, not radios.

the antenna receives the radio signal and sends via coax cable to the back of the radio. same as most, just need to run the cable and have the right connector at the end :-) I have my cb and ham anntenas up there

Microwave repeater. *

* I just made up that part.
The antennae wire runs through a common loom with the driving and fog lights and spits off once it enters the engine bay.

I was playing cassettes for a good while on my OEM stereo.
Cassettes take up a lot of room.

My antenna on my FJ73 was broken off, then the screw was lost after an attempt to JB Weld it all back together. I don't think mine is OEM but either way I am going to have to replace it. I am seeing a lot of conflicting information but it seems like there is no proper way to actually replace it without removing the fender. Anyone have documentation of doing this without removing the fender?

Why not just pull the inner fender?

While I haven't replaced a 70-series antenna yet I have replaced them on other Cruisers and access has always been through the inner fender.

You do know OEM is available too right?

Cheers

I am aware that OEM is available but back to my question....I would rather not remove fenders and was looking for a documented way to do it that way. So much for tech.

Looks like I will try @Dprio34 's method and find a kid with small arms that I can bribe into helping me. :)
