Stock radio antenna replacement

I was able to get a new antenna (LHD part number but I believe I can make it work) and I have been studying the 74 for some time trying to figure out how the hell to get in there to replace it. My arm will not bend in enough places to get inside the inner fender.

Does one have to pull the wheelhouse out?

Yeah, you have to pull the upper fender off. I have a new antenna for my troopie that has been sitting in the parts box because I am too lazy to pull everything apart.

Good idea. I have to get the antenna body out of the fender first though....That appers to be the most difficult part.

By he way it looks like the main difference between LHD and RHD antennas is the lower mounting bracket is a mirror image. It looks like I can swap brackets (the original looks OK as far as I can tell) and make the rest work.

I did mine the other day. No panel removal needed, it's not an electric one though.

My body guy did it for me when he replaced the fender. I swapped the lower bracket over from the original antenna and it went right in.

I think there are simply numerous bolts.

Perhaps an easier solution.

The antenna I have has the bracket at the bottom and is extendd by hand, not powered.

Did anyone end up replacing a non-powered antenna? I went through the car wash today and stupidly did not lower the antenna. The wife is going to have my head if I have to remove a fender to fix this!

Yes I replaced my antenna (non powered).
Yes I had the fender off.
Before removal, I tied a wire to the antenna's radio lead so I could pull the new lead back through.
It might help to attach wire or string to the extensible part of the antenna too, to pull the new one into place.
Here's the antenna in place before tightening nuts.

I've been thinking of that option as well. My stock antenna is broken off. All options seem like a PITA to get a wire to though. I will probably just keep acting like it doesn't bother me

It isn't that bad I just did it by removing the Dr side door to get more access(I needed to replace the door hinges anyways so it was a win-win).
For running the wire you already have to take the radio out so if you just pull the meter cover (~6 screws, and a couple of plugs) and loosen up the meter (only 4 screws) you can run the new antenna wire easily with no issues. It looks like a lot, but on these cars it is pretty easy.
