Ok so I am driving my 79 FJ40 almost everyday to and from work. I am finding that my steering has a lot of slop in it. And the steering wheel is not straight.

I am thinking with manual steering and 140+ miles that tie rod ends and maybe some other stuff might need to be replaced.

What would you all suggest looking at doing first?

Thanks

All of your steering components;)

Start at the rag joint above the steering box and work down from there. The box, drag link end, center arm, and tie rod ends can all contribute. I've replaced everything but the box and I still have some slop. Do a search on you will find more than you care to read on the subject.

Good luck!

Toe in adjustment. Should be 1/4inch toed in.

Do a search & you can adjust the front end yourself.

Lastly, you can straighten out the steering wheel.

yes i agree you want to check everything. joints angles parts all that stuff

The biggest slop in mine I've found was a severly worn out rag joint. New one is finally on it's way from CCOT.

I've also got some new shackle bushings in the garage to replace. If those two things don't fix it, I'll be moving on to the TREs that seem to have a little play in them.

I just hope that the first two things will at least make it driveable so I can find and fix the other problems. After buying it a few weeks ago and driving it 90 miles home, I've driven it about 5 miles total.
