You could also replace the engine mounts, especially if you're going to lift engine a bit to remove the rack, which is an accepted way to avoid removing the oil filter housing per FSM.

that's a great idea. at 20 years young I imagine most of the soft parts are drying up in terms of rubber!
shop manager said they were going to pull the oil filter housing to get at it though.

Does this kit benefit a '99 stock set-up, with factory wheel/tires? Getting a reman. rack installed next week. Want to give my rig the best ride on and off road... Steering - rack and pinion mount bushing - W13210

Prefer to avoid "too stiff" or have crossed bushing tension/response,
Obviously I don't know much about this aspect of our trucks, any feedback super appreciated and I will research through the threads now.
Rubber vs Poly bushings... I think it is just a matter of preference. For you, I'd probably just recommend going with included rubber bushings.

... now i have to research 555 outer tie rod ends and whiteline/superpro bushings to translate this thread. :hmm:
my '99 needs new rack, it's pouring PS fluid driver's side.
K&H Imports in Canoga Park lets you order online wholesale + ship parts direct to them which saves major $$... they charge only labor. super top shelf LC enthusiasts there! K & H Imports Auto Repair - Canoga Park - Canoga Park, CA
i want the truck tight again, so it looks like we need to address:
rack - only remanufactured steering racks are now avail for 100 series. i am going to recycle my rack for a reman, so you're welcome whoever gets my parts
upper & lower control arm bushings
inner & outer tie rod ends
all ball joints
CVs?

also:
wheel bearings
rotors perhaps
not sure what diff drop is, have to research.

also replacing pulley & drive belt.

you all inspired this list, thanks for sharing your to-do lists and getting me psyched!

What's your reasoning for not sticking with OEM for the rack? I think they're about $600 from a dealer.

I was misinformed by a parts guy. New racks OEM are still available. Buying direct from a CO dealer.

there is no better time to replace a leaking exhaust manifold (drivers side) then when the steering rack is being replaced.

how do we know if our exhaust manifold is leaking and needs replacing?

You'll know when a manifold is leaking. If your car makes a tick, tick, tick, tick sound coming from the manifolds when you turn it on. Most of us leave it alone if the ticking sound goes away when the car is warmed up.

Getting another new OEM rack. Would guys recommend to outfit it with poly bushings out the box? Or stick with OEM? Will poly bushings Outlast the OEM ones?

I'd think if you're pushing it (34"+ tires), go poly, otherwise oem should hold up.

Just adding to this thread as I am now pulling out my s***ty Toyota remanned rack and putting in a new OEM rack.
>> There are also lots of little cooling hoses down there running to and from the oil filter. It gets hot down there and my hoses were pretty swollen, nice to know they have been replaced.
