I’m not sure. I know that when the LS was installed, they put a 60 frame under the 62Strange. Wonder if someone swapped a column on from another model for whatever reason.
I can't figure this out with out something to compare to. My latest theory is that the intermediate shaft in the column has collapsed. I know there was a big wreck and the original frame got bent, so maybe the driver impacted the steering wheel and compressed the intermediate shaft in the column. Either that or the intermediate shaft in the engine bay has been compressed. Looking for measurements- length of intermediate shaft in engine bay and length of the column tube.

Hi, no, it doesn’t move in or out. Won’t separate. I’ll have to look at the U joints. It seams like the lower tube is jammed in the upper tube, but never having taken it apart, not sure what I am looking for.it is made to compress and extend, it is not a fixed length, it has a splined section similar to a driveshaft
does yours move in and out? if pulled all the way it will separate into 2 pieces
does yours have the large or small ujoints?
put it in a vice and pull
in the pic above the slip yoke is where the large left side will slide over the smaller right side
how about a pic of the shaft?
No, the silver one is from the column. It clearly looks like it’s supposed to move as does the column tube. Banged on the tube, still won’t move. Don’t know the length of the intermediate shaft in the columnthat looks like the shaft out of the steering column, it doesn't move
my mistake, I looked at the pic quickly this morning, I thought it was the shaft off the steering box
I think that one is only supposed to move in a crash. It has no need to be a slip joint like the lower one at the steering box.
Unless the body impacted the column and they replaced the slip joint., which is my theory at this point. The lower tube does not move i n the upper tube, and I don't know the measurement of there intermediate tube, but everyone i have talked to has a different measurement than mine for the tube length. The shaft near the steering box seems to be right. But I do know that the intermediate shaft in the column is built to move.I think that one is only supposed to move in a crash. It has no need to be a slip joint like the lower one at the steering box.
Column in! Yay! there was a flat spot on the shaft that needed to be in special position. On to the shifter....So, the column was compacted and was able to source the lower part of the column below the tilt joint. Trying to wrangle it in place but got tired. There must be a trick. Hoping to get it back in place tomorrow and the rest of the dash finished up. Going to put my BMW E92 seats back in because the E70's i bought on Ebay won't fit. I hope I can sell them before buying a new set.
Oh man, people are digging up old stuff. Trying to remember. I think I took off the steering wheel and removed the wholeI hate to bring this thread back to life, but I see you @Richfj60 removed the intermediate shaft from the steering column housing. Could you or someone help me figure out how to do it? I’ve got the column out of the truck and want to replace the bearing and u-joint. Thanks!
