1977 FJ40 / 2F / Saginaw Conversion

This issue has been addressed by other members here, but I have a logistical question.
I need to replace this bushing due to an insanely annoying metal / metal knocking at the firewall :

To execute this replacement, do I need to pull the steering wheel, turn signal switch, bearing, and upper bracket
to get at the bushing, or is there an easier route?

Any input from those who have ventured down this road would be appreciated.

Thank you,
Michael

Does anyone have a blown up image like that for the newer style collapsable 40 column? 81 and newer I believe.

Don't mean to hijack this old thread, but how compatible is the collapsible column with the older column as far as mounting points and electrical connector?

I've been looking at my Saginaw setup that's about 1/8" from the very solid bumper and thinking that a collapsible section of the column would be a nice safety feature.

I agree that having a collapsible column is a good idea.

The attachment flange ("cover", part #45263, "shield" #45264 and "plate" #45255) at the firewall are different, as is the shape of the hole in the firewall - not sure about other details, like the attachment to the underside of the dash...

46807 is surely different. The bracket is probably part of the collapsing mechanism. The early bracket is just steel bolted to the steel dash.

Yeah, that bracket has a pair of aluminum slugs in it which shear off from the mounting bolts if the steering column gets violently compressed. I can't remember though how the bolt spacing of that component and the welded flange on the older style column compared.

Lower shaft

Here is pic of the part for the lower steering column if you go OEM, they were still available through Toyota for about $13, It doesn't look like it, but there is a slit in the side which will allow you to slide it over the shaft and push into the tube. I haven't gotten that far yet. So you shouldn't have to disassemble the hole steering column, but will have to remove from firewall. Again I haven't done it yet so I am not 100% positive, I have take the column apart and it is not hard.

What if you just want to remove a RATTLE from you stock column on a '78? Same lower bushing I assume??

Anybody solved this annoying firewall knocking for the later fj40 collapsible column (81+)? The lower shaft has a new rag joint, but the upper end of that shaft are the firewall has play and this pictures bushing is toast. Having issues identifying the parts to correct and the procedure to do so (again, specifically for the later model set up). Thank you in advance for any help!
