swing by tyke moses's "land cruiser emporium" in pownal VT...he builds heavy duty tubs...3/16" sides...you will break the rocks and trees before you break you rig :)

Does he have a website? I'd like to see some of his work its the first I hear of him. :)

You can contact Wally by e-mail at farmboy at sover dot net. I don't think he has a website. He mostly builds tubs for local customers. He does very good work, and is reasonable for the amount of work involved in the tub.

JohnnyC and Rabid on this board I'm sure can give you some very good feedback on his work.

no functioning site right now. It is down.

A bunch of people on this board (myself included) can put you in touch or vouch for his work.

Custom fit only, he will not build it unless he has the truck in his shop. That way he can make sure it fits, hardtop fits, doors close, etc.

The damage is from dropping off a large rock onto that quarter in NH at the "toll booth" at the Homestead. The whole truck came down on that quarter and the rock only took off paint.

edit: I wish he made fenders :) the mangled ones in the pics were new not long ago.

Metaltech someday....

I know that those of you who know where I work will judge my input on the steel tub debate as biased. I would just like to say that I talk to Landcruiser owners all day at work and I would make sure that product is available before you shell out $5000.00 USD. I get lots of feedback from lots of owners and I wish that I could say more.

I know a ton of people with aqualu tubs and every single one is happy. I have seen them take serious shots off road and hold up fine. I am biased as mine is steel, but I would take a serious look at the aqualu if you were doing a resto. It is a great product for the money. In the northeast, a stock steel tub is a collosal waste of coin.

Mine is a trail truck, and that is what the wally tub is built for.

BigRedfj40- I cannot believe she still looks that good with the abuse (and rollovers) that girl has seen.

IMO, the tub on Johnny's truck saved his life. There was not a full cage in that truck when it rolled at 60MPH. The cop was looking for the "victim" at the accident scene. That is the tub I want on my trail truck.

Heritage looks good from what I have seen, but after fixing rust on FJ40's for 22 years now, I'll be buying Aqualu for my next truck. AND, now that Todd makes the cowl out of AL and you can buy it and the tub welded together as one piece.

No other way to go in my oppinion. I can't wait to see more of the frames that Aqualu is making.

Aluminum, properly painted =NO RUST and longer lasting. Makes sense to me.

Just my oppinion.

Well, I've been saying Heritage was insanely over priced...guess I wasn't the only one saying it.

Here's a pic of my Aqualu tub prior to it being shipped...both cowl and 3/4 tub are welded together and it has the storage box and the storage tailgate:

I'm very impressed with Aqualu's product. Thanks to Bob ("Alumacruiser") for all of the help and assistance both before and during my order.

I'm in the process of sanding it down to ready it for self-etching primer. Then a good epoxy primer before the final top coats of Dune Beige. Underside is getting color matched SEM Pro-Tex bed liner coating (smooth, glossy and easily washes off) and the interior is getting Rhino Liner.

Good bye rusty tub.

For the Aqualu tub with cowl, how do deal with the issue of VIN tags and registration?

Thanks,
Bill

drill out the rivets from the old vin plate and screw it into the new body is what i've read from other threads.. not sure about the law regarding this though.

I believe it's a violation of Federal law. That's why I was wondering.

That's a tough one.

The letter of the law is one thing, the enforcement of it is another. Here in VA lots of stuff that is clearly illegal such as spring overs are gotten away with by some and not by others. Depends on where you live and how much you drive. Any way you slice it, not legal - but people do them all the time.

If you went to the VA DMV and told them you swapped bodies, they'd try to get you to register as a "reconstructed vehicle" which then turns into an insurance nightmare.

However, I doubt that they would enforce the law about removing the rivits and reinstalling. Can I say that it's not a problem? I don't think so and don't know for sure but on the other hand, I think you could get away with it.

Call you local goverment and ask them. Clearly, it's something that people do and don't have a problem with. I don't think it's an issue.

I had heard if you are using a pre-vin'd body..."used body" it's illegal just to switch...esspecially if it were a wrecked truck...but a new body is unvin'd ...and transfering a vin plate is legal.

if a body should have the vin incorperated into the body..."stamped into it" you need to take the stamped section and replace into the new body.

From what i remember here in NY anyway

I could be wrong tho :)

That makes a lot of sense to me. If it started out with one VIN and then you switched it Vs. a replacement part. It might be the case, that if you have to meet with the local rule makes you make this argument. Show them the receipt and tell them you replaced a part.

The grey mini on that site was stolen by local kids one night while parked at a friends driveway.

We found out by a 7AM phone call from a local farmer who said " you boys looking for your truck? It is upside down in my field."

The for sale tag was still in the window. Total loss, sold it for parts. Uninsured.

Both his and my trucks have seriously evolved since then.

Yes there it is perfectly legal in all 50 states to replace body parts on a truck with non-vin'ed parts and transfer the vin plate.

and speaking of that I have 2 3/4 tubs in stock from the premium line for sale

1- late-model 79-84

1- mid-model 74-78

the other 4 I have in stock are sold.
