Starter or Neutral Safety switch

Inspected the connector at the tranny and it looked good, no broken wires

I then removed the connector and saw a bunch of crap in the contacts.

I sprayed degereaser on it and took a wire brush and then brake clean on it and the contacts mounted on the tranny.

Wiped it all up and she started right up vs wouldn't before I tried the connector

Lets hope thats it. Didn't have a small file that could get down inside the contacts, got the top and probably a little bit inside with the brush plus cleaning the male part from the tranny

I am confused as to why it started before when I tapped the starter other than the slight mechanical movement at the connector caused by pounding the starter

Where on the transmission is this connector located? Driver side? Fore? Aft? Top? Bottom? Is it easy to get too?

My intermittent start gremlin has resurfaced.

I need to check this connector out and clean it.

Nevermind. Found directions to that connector.

Okay. I give up. Where is this connector which is attached to the neutral safety switch? Does this picture show it on top of the transmission or on the side of the transmission?

Help me find this thing. Easy non-complicated directions for my non-complicated brain. :crybaby:

the connector on the left

Get under the passenger side, feel the side of the tranny for that linkage and the connector is right above it. Not sure you can see the connector, I just felt for it.

On my A343F it is on the passenger side of the transmission near the front driveshaft (same as Shipwreck's picture). I don't know about your A442F. Easiest way to find it would be to follow the shifter linkage down from the shifter down to the transmission. The spot where it connects to the transmission should be the switch. I think the older transmissions had a pigtail coming off the NSS that connected to the harness as opposed to the connector directly on the switch. HTH!

Oh man. I didn't think about the differences in transmissions I was in a rush. No wonder I couldn't find that connector. Crapper. Hmmm... could the NSS on the A442F be in the same location as the A343F?

Could be, but I recall someone saying it was on the other side on the older models (drivers side).

The NSS is on the driver side for A442F. The good news is there is no connector at the NSS.

Call me stupid, but this probably takes the NSS out of the equation for potential starting issues on a cruiser equipped with the A442f?

I am reviving this..... my truck is not even attempting to start. Switched batteries and tried jumping, nothing. Wacked the starter... nothing. When I turn the key to on position I have all my lights, the a/t temp and oil light, that means my nss plug is good right???? So I shouldn't need to check that. What should be my next step??? Some people have recommended jumping the starter from the battery????

Problem with this is theres so much info to digest I feel a little lost.

Do the mandatory checks, but the easiest is to wire in the relay directly to the starter. Ive been through it all. Start with that first. Internal wiring connections gets old and voltage drops add up. Save yourself time, frustration and effort and wire in the relay directly to the black wire connector on the starter. If you have any other questions please post or PM me.

Its back...weird starting issues...all lights come on and it clicks but no start..sometimes if I wait a few it will start sometimes not..today started twice no issues third time required a tow truck ride home :-( got it home and it started right up.. Pulled the starter and brushes look good and measure within spec

in my HDJ80 auto A442 I had 2 cables ( black and white ) to round connector going to my tranny .. joing both and voilá you by pass the safety switch ..

Guess I will look at that.. I also think my battery might be weak. What side of the tranny is that plug?

Passengers side easy to jump. Check to make sure you have good tight terminals on the battery mine caused lots of problems.

I'm having the same issues, got a new starter, new battery and it still does it when is hot.

I went to a road trip this past weekend and it did it twice, the first time it started right after the second try however, the second time it happened I could only star the truck in N ( neutral). It will start right on..

Can someone please give me some advice? is this the same issue as everyone had before or should I look into something else?

I am planing a trip to Florida ( From Texas) and I do not want it to be something that ruins my trip.

Thanks in advance,

B.

Wire in a relay. I went through the same mess you're dealing with. Replaced almost every little thing I could.... starter... starter contacts... ignition switch... just to name a few. I posted on a thread somewhere about wiring in a relay to get the black wire on the starter the proper voltage. I'd post it up myself but I'm on my way to work.

It's the proper fix. I haven't had a problem since. Do this simple fix first and all the others secondary. I say that because it's quick, simple and easy to do.

Good luck. I'll check back later!

Ron
