Hello, I have a 1981 fj40 that starts and runs with no problem. My instrument cluster is currently out getting repaired. When I hook up the battery, the headlights function. When I turn the key to start it, everything dies. I think that I saw somewhere something about needing to bypass the ammeter to start it. Could that be the problem? How would I do that? I would like to take my Fj to the mechanic before I get the cluster back and would love to get it started. Thanks!

The 2 wires going to the ammeter…temporarily attach them together, turn key and it will start.

On the 81, assuming it is stock, the ammeter only measures the voltage drop across the fusible link, so should not impact starting.

Be super careful about loose ammeter wires in the dash when the battery is connected. Many bad things can happen when ammeter wires touch the body.
