ok, update... figured a few things out tonight too:

1. Clamps and vices are nice when you dont have a helper.

2. Trying to tack weld and hold metal at the same time is tough but can be done.

3. Harbor Freight notchers stink:

4. Carbide bits are the money shot for fine tuning notches after you have to use a grinder for notches since your harbor freight notcher is broken...

5. Pipe master Tube thing-a-ma-bobs kick arse for making notches:

you just fit it onto the tube to get the shape and then trace:

Still have to add the rear stinger, add the cross pieces from the brackets to the hitch and connet the side protection to the frame. Should have more time tomorrow night.

oh yeah.... working in the rain because your cruiser is too big to get in the garage stinks too.

Nice work!

Looks good... I'll be psyched to see it when it's done!

well... I better come clean. Here's the real fabber in the family. She got grounded today so her punishment was to help me. :) We had a great time tonight, she's actually a pretty decent welder.

I'm pretty much done except for adding a rear stinger and fully welding all the pieces

tomorrow I hope to close up the tube with some flat bar where needed, prime it and paint it if I have time.

Great looking bumper, will it be on by meeting time? I'd like to look it over. That pipe angle finder is pretty snazzy. Looks like you've got some time-savin' toys in your fabbing toolset.

It must have been fun lifting that heavy axle onto the bottom of your work bench.

Yeah that d60 is not light what-so-ever. It ended up rolling back and the yoke put a hole through the drywall... oh well. The next time I move it will be the day it gets built. My poor back cant take moving it again. The pipe master is a pretty cool tool. I like picking up little tools like that along the way. I've been collecting tools over the past few years one by one so that I'd be ready to take on some bigger projects and not have to pony up a lot of cash all at once for tools to complete a project.

I usually pick up a tool at HF just to give a feel for how a tool will work... if it ends up being useful I like to replace the HF tool with a quailty one. The HF tube notcher will probably be replaced with a JMR or low-buck notcher although the grinder method works pretty well too.

Close yet? Cool that your daughter welds. Looks like a great bumper to be!

got it all fully welded last night (minus the 4 voids in the ends) and first coat of primer. Learned another few lessons last night... remember to turn your gas on, remember to change the heat when going from welding thick plate to thin tube, and remember to buy extra tips and wire when doing a project like this.
