I have a 2013 lx and it has factory 20 wheels with Michelin Latitdude. I like the look of the 20 wheels however, new land cruiser 18 inch wheels take off are dirt cheap. there are a lot more options and cheaper tires for 18 inch wheels. 99 percent over the paved road driving. I am thinking my set tires will be Michelin Defenders based on all the great reviews. What would I lose by switching to 18 inch wheels from 20 inch wheel?

Buy a trolley jack, bit of timber and just run 20's daily then throw the 18's on when going off road.

I put brand new OEM pads and rotors on all four corners of my '11 LC a few months ago (with ~1,500 miles driven since,) and these suckers just will not squealing like a banshee no matter how I drive. At first I thought it was just a wear-in phase, but it simply hasn't let up since swapping them in. Backing out of my driveway cold: squeal; stop and go traffic when luke-warm: squeal; getting back into the city after 100 hot highway miles: squeal. On my previous 4Runner, I used Akebono ceramics and never heard a peep out of the pads even from a brand new set, but I thought I'd indulge a bit and go full OEM for the brake swap when I upgraded to the LC.

Am I just overly sensitive to brake noise, or are these OEM pads really this prone to crying out for attention?

SAME.

I have about 2k miles since replacing all 4 corners and they are doing much better now vs when fresh, but still squeal 50% of the time during low speed braking [parking lots/stop signs/etc]. I'm going to try to re-bed them in soon. I put lube on the pins and backing plates, and maybe that was a mistake?

My previous track car had zero squeal while being meticulous with hi-temp anti-seize, just pad clank when changing direction, so I'm kinda baffled here.

Anti-squeal brake shims.

Every modern car has these fitted stock. These may need to be replaced if they are worn and no longer fitting well. They also need to be appropriately greased. A step that a tech could easily ignore or shortcut. Or not bother putting back at all at worse.

Ah - I should have mentioned that all four corners have shims and more than enough brake-specific grease with OEM retention and return spring clips in place. I swapped the brakes myself, and have a good bit of experience with brakes, so I'd like to think I can be confident that the install isn't the culprit. I'm still new to LCs, but to my ears the squeal is far and above anything I'd expect from properly broken-in OEM brakes. 🤷‍♂️

Edit: One caveat – I reused the brake shims from the previously-installed pads on my LC since the pads I bought from a dealer didn't include them. I have no idea if the previous pads were OEM, but all other maintenance records indicate full dealer service since new so I had no reason to doubt that they (and the shims) were OEM, plus they fit the new pads with no issues at all.

Anyone know the size/thread of the bolt for the cargo area tie downs?

The bolt part number is: 91673-A0616 (outlined in red below)

thanks!

You might consider trying Akebono ceramic pads. They're all I use anymore on every car I own, due to being silent and dustless.

Same results for me. Changed front and rear OEM and parking brakes also all shims and pins. First few hundred after break in were completely silent. Now at a few thousand PS rear comes and goes with the squealing. Chalking it up to break in, glad it’s not just mine gives more comfort it’s the pad material. I stagger tire rotation with oil change so I don’t have to do both at the same time, 2k ago I inspected pads and rotors they seem fine to me...

Why should it be due to break in? They never seem to squeak when we first get our vehicles new, so OEM replacements shouldn't be squeaking either, unless some other component needs to be replaced or adjusted to get everything back to the original specs.

Let me clarify because I used the wrong word, also. After the initial bed-in at replacement, they were completely silent for the first 200-300 miles. Very happy with pedal and stopping power. I'm pretty anal so I took it easy for the first 1,000 miles. Now they have about 3-4k and what I believe is the passenger rear has been squealing only on initial bite, sometimes it lasts little longer, worst when cold, but it seems to have quieted down some in the last month. About 2k ago I rotated tires and visually inspected all four rotors and pads, but I did not remove calipers, and they seemed fine to me. Front rotors had no glazing, silky smooth and had finally worn off all the swirls that are on the surface from factory. Same with the rears. All pads seemed to be fine and same with the pins in the front and shims all around. Next rotation I will remove calipers and do more thorough investigation. Other than the occasional squeal, they have been great. Stopping power is great, very little dust, and the truck stops completely smooth, no vibrations or pulsations of any kind. Butter. Very happy with them, just not sure about the noise.

If there were groves or something out the ordinary present I would be more concerned but since everything appears to be normal to the eye, I'm not sweating it too much at the moment. I have been meaning to pose the same question but have been holding off thinking I'm being unreasonable.

I also believe it has nothing to do with parking shoes, which have been working fine also. E Brake is strong and no evidence of dragging. :meh:

This is exactly what happened over here, I thoroughly cleaned the shims and then lubed them. Rears started to squeak, then the fronts, that said it happens ~50% of the time during low speed braking.

If a re-bed doesn't solve it I'm going to use copper anti-seize on the shims after another bath in cleaner. Will snap some photos too.
