Hi all hoping one of you can help,

my speedo cable point at tfc has been leaking for a while but it has started leaking inside the cabin as well now so it's time to address it.

as far as i know i need a seal - 96711-24030 for the outer part of the speedo drive at the transfer case.

what i am unsure about is the part number for the internal seal (located at the transfer case end i think) that will stop the oil from being pumped up the cable and into the cabin around the clutch pedal area.

i also have a small leak at the drain hole between the manual box and the transfer case i'm not sure about. the car has a hose fitted between the fill plugs which baffles me as they are at different heights. any clarification would be great.

love the forum been lurking for ages. cheers.

What year and model is this on? Older rigs like the FJ 40s are known to have seal failures between the transmission and transfer case. For some reason, they USUALLY pump the gear oil uphill from the transfer to the transmission, so a popular method of dealing with it is to add the hose to let it drain back down to the transfer. If the seal between the two boxes is really bad, then the gear oil will drain down with gravity and overfill the transfer case. This could cause excess oil to get into the speedo drive and it can migrate up the cable. You may need to replace the seal between the two cases. Never heard of it being a problem in the 80 series rigs. John

Thanks John it's a '91 80 series.
it has the old 3f (not 3fe) motor from the 40's in it. But the running gear should be the same as the 3fe etc. it's still fulltime 4wd.

the transfer case is defiantly over filled. to the point that when i removed the speedo cable oil was poring out!

what is funny is there apears to be a drain hole in the casting at the join of TC to box. there is a small oil leak out of that hole also but not massive.

any idea if the seal between the boxes is hard to do?

it's more involved than installing the transfer hose - but you'd still need to fix your speedo cable leak(s)

haha nice.

The previous owner installed the hose. i think i'll have to do it properly somehow. i guess i should get rid of the hose once seal is done? Though i did read somewhere it can be a preventative measure to have one installed.

Do the boxes have to come out or can it be done by separating?

Have to do the birfs aswell.
Also has alot of backlash.
any/all of this connected?

I wouldn't get rid of the connector hose, but that's just me, having a 40 series background

birfs are a separate deal

The hose is reallyg good for when the oil pumps UP from the transfer and over fills the transmission. But since the transfer is already lower than the transmission, it is not very effective at dealing with situations when the oil is running down and over filling the transfer case.

It can be done on the rig by just pulling the transfer case, but I prefer dropping the whole assembly and then fixing it out in the open where I can get to it easier. John
