I just completed my set of factory manuals. Several procedures call for the use of SSTs. Are these tools really neccessary or can basic tools be substituted? Can one even obtain the SSTs referenced inthe manual? Sorry for the newb question......

From what I've found and in a lot of cases, the SST is something you can work around. There are special measuring devices in the manual, and you're kind of out there (for the power steering pump, the smog pump, etc). I've found, like in the carb rebuild section, a flat-blade screwdriver works just fine instead of the SST...you just have to be creative.

call 1-800-GO TOYOTA and tell them you need the manuals and that you'd like the number for Toyota Publications. It'll cost a tad less than going through a dealer or SOR, but you can do that too. I called Toyota Publications and had them confirm which books I needed.

Thanks Swank, that's exactly the kind of info I was looking for.

Jeff, I got all my manuals from SOR, except the $80 body chassis manual which Overloard on this very board was kind enough to point out is available for download at Birfield (over 700 single sided pages!!). I think the only manual I don't have now is the wiring stuff.
