Speaker replacement -

I installed 6x9" speakers in my front & rear doors. Most audio stores sell speaker spacers in various thicknesses so you don't have to mess with the weatherstrippng that I've read people are using. You have to cut the rear door sheetmetal if you plan on running anything bigger than 4". So I figured, why not just cut it to fit a 6x9. I bypassed the o.e. amps and ran my own system w/ amp power running 4 6x9's in the doors, and that got all the sound I wanted. That was until I removed the doors. Then I installed 4" Coaxial speakers in the dash and put 2 of the 6x9's in the rear tailgate.

Sort of an update to this thread for people out there looking for current speaker models that will fit.

I bought a pair of Pioneer TS-G1643R 6.5" from Best Buy, but they're on Amazon and other sites. They're 1 5/8" deep, so just a tad bit too deep to fit without some sort of spacer. I opted to follow what jeffro did and reused the black plastic cover after cutting off the center portion.

Turns out that my cruiser doesn't have front door speakers! I have attached the following 3 pics to show the 2 speakers that are located on the bottom of the dashboard and the passenger side door to show how there isn't a place for the speaker! Is this normal? I'm guessing I have the bottom of the line basic stereo system and that's why I don't have door speakers! Should I install door speakers if I decide to upgrade the system, which means that I have to cut away at the door panels, or not?

That's how it is on some models. Mine is a mid-east spec VX trim model. I opted not to hack the door panel. Just put in slightly better speakers. :)

Anybody know where to find some pics of speakers fitted in the front door that didn't have a tock speaker hole with grill?

like this door but then with a custom made hole made into them..

So..bumping an old thread to see if there are any newer model speakers that anybody has used recently since it’s almost 2018. Just thinkin there should be some new speakers that may work well or new mods or options that people have gone with. Thanks

Interested too. Have read most of the other threads. My front speakers are not sounding so good. Local stores are offering a full setup with subwoofer and new speakers but don't really want to pay that kind of money. Looking for a nice DIY way to upgrade the front and rear speakers. Thanks.

I’m planning to build a molded fiberglass enclosure for a small 6 or 8 inch sub in the back, lizard skin sound and temperature the inside of the 4 doors and the hatch plus any skin I can get to from panels. The rear upper speakers are going to get flood lamps for lighting in the back kind of like an airplane.

I was even thinking to possibly do a 7x11 in the rear to give a little bass but still have sound gorncamping and such. I don’t need a lot of really bottom end sound. Just looking for something full.

I went with this sub in another 80 I own. I had planned on building a custom box but the speaker by itself was just as much as the one with the box so got the whole thing. Enclosure sucks. There just isn't enough space to get any kind of good sound out of it.

So next up is a custom floor with sub enclosure.

I love the Pioneer 6 channel amps. Great addition to a good stereo without breaking the bank. Small and class D means it doesn't run hot.

I've heard just about all the different speaker options for an 80. Nothing compares to a door speaker with a tuned box. The pioneers are usually what I put in 90% of my customers 80's

that's decent -- I had a bitch of a time wrangling the front doors in my '94 -- the Eclipses, but it eventually worked -- without duct tape -- ;)

With my '91, there are no door speakers -- just lower dash -- those went in easily and sound surprisingly good --

What size Eclipses?

Here is a copy from my build page.

Finally upgraded my speakers. I tried the Pioneers and then the Polk DB but did not like the lower quality sound and lack of fullness. I end up installing Focal ISC series. I used a 5.25 in the front and a 6.5 in the rear. I disconnected the dash 2.5 and the trunk 2.5. I will replace the dash speakers and use them for my Ham radio later since I don't feel I will need them after listening to the Focal's. I did buy a 6.5 subwoofer but I am not sure I will use it now. I really love how they match the interior and look almost like a stock upgrade.

The install was pretty straightforward. in the front I made a 6"x 1/2" spacer to put under the door card to give the 5.25 a hard surface to mount to then I mounted it over the door card in the factory holes. In the rear I cut the sheet metal opening larger and made a 1/2 spacer the same size as the speaker cover and mounted the whole thing with sheet metal screws to the doors inner sheet metal..
