In case you are wondering exactly how LAME the sub and amp are (looking, that is, we all know what kind of sound the reproduce):::

Sub is (94 FZJ80) 6" paper cone, amp is about the size of two decks of playing cards...

Nice Job

Dude, you make that look easy. I'm going to run with your idea. Thanks  Do you by chance have any other smokin ideas on mounting speakers on a 76 FJ 45?

23May2005 (UTC +8)

FWIW, on my former 1996 HDJ-80, which can interchange the speakers with the 1997 FZJ-80, I used Rockford Fosgate (FRC1204T) for the dashboard, and Kenwood (5.25" KFC-1387 & 4" KFC-1077) front and rear door speakers.

I wonder how many square feet of Dynamat Xtreme you'd need to cover everything in an FZJ-80? Anybody done that much yet?

Not sure about that, but it will be $$$$....

Should't take too long to figure it out with a tape, I'd figure in an addtl 15% for waste and curves and humps.....

But for that much you should buy the large rools off of Ebay or consider the the other alternatives,

I put the Infinity's in my doors, still had to modify the edges to get them to fit though. Sound is good. I happened to ask at Sunshine Audio in Colorado Springs, CO when I was there on a visit, had only one set left. I have found them on the internet but kind of pricey.

Just bought these - my back speakers are fine so leave them for now. These seem good for front replacement.

Well, I had this post saved as many others probaly do and I just wanted to add phase I of mine to this thread since it's a little different. I wanted to go the bling factor and have my speakers show.
Stock crap speaker

Next instead of 1/4" spacers you need 1/2" spacers. Here I glued my two sets of 1/4" spacers together and then went and bought 1/2" ones for the other side.

And at last the finished product.

Wow, you can deffinately turn the base up with these in now! I am contemplating purchasing 2" speakers for the rear roof cargo area and the dash board now that I know they exist but will probably end up doing a light mod in the rear cargo area and ditching the dash speakers instead.

Does anyone know the max mounting depth of the front and rear doors, maintaining the stock Land Cruiser speaker covers?

I fianally got around to intalling my 4" rear door speakers. Now I need a ring to cover up the indentions of the stock speaker grills.
Here is a pic of the new holes drilled and speaker wires snipped since you can't get to the back of the stock speakers to remove them.

And here is the final results and you can see that I need a ring to cover up the indentions in the vinal.

Blaupunkt Component Speakers

Those eclipse look nice, but I actually found another pair that fit quit well in the stock mounts. Thet are component speakers (separately mounted tweeters with a crossover), so you get much better sound, especially since the FJ80's dash-mounted speakers are so weak on the high end (not suprising since they are pointed at the floor).

I used Blaupunkt 5-1/4 component speakers in the front and back and they sound great. They are made with the magnet located in front of the speaker instead of behind it, so the mounting debth is shallow enough to fit in the rediculously sized FJ80 mounting holes.

Unfortunately, I just checked Blaupunkt's web page and they don't appear to be making them any more. I put mine in about three years ago. But, it looks like they may be available on e-Bay or as closeouts if anyone is interested.

However, I would recommend adding an after-market amp if you wany to go this route. You will need the extra wattage to get these speakers to do what they were made to do. I am running a 740 Watt amp with a 12" Infiniti sub in addition to my two pair of Blaupunkts and it sounds great.

Always glad to see others improving on what is the only glaring weak part of the 80--the stereo system.

Speaker spacer idea

Here's what I did for creating a speaker spacer to move replacement speakers out from the inside of the front doors.

I carefully peeled off the black plastic cover that covered the stock front door speakers. This is the cover with all of the small round holes in it. Taking off this cover will ruin the stock speaker because it will pull the cone off of the outer ring of the speaker.

Then I cut out the center of the cover leaving a large ring that exactly matched the speaker door opening including the hole locations. I figured the stock speakers were complete junk, so dissecting parts off of the speaker was no problem. The dismantled stock speakers quickly went into the garbage can.

Then I installed weather stripping between the replacement speakers and the black plastic speaker spacer I created. This ensured a tight fit of the new speaker, and will prevent any unwanted vibrations.

Then I used longer sheet metal screws from the hardware store. I don't remember the size, but the diameter and thread spacing exactly match the stock size - these screws are just longer.

I took many more photos, but can only upload three.

I hope this idea helps.

Speaker brand, model and size

By the way - these are 6.5" speakers. There have been a lot of previous questions here on Mud about what size speakers will work. I wanted to put the largest size in that would fit. These 6.5" speakers fit fine, as shown in the photo.

Pioneer model TS-G1641R.

They sound great with my Scion head unit.

When you mention size, you must also post the max depth. The door can handle 6.5 inch speakers, it's always the depth that will get you if concerned about keeping the stock looking speaker covers.
I just got 5.25 Pioneer speakers today, their 3 way speakers and the mounting depth 2.25 - I know that they will fit in the hole, but for me I want to keep those stock speaker covers, hopefully there's enough room back there to pull it off.
I will post back and let you know how things turned out.

How big are the holes for the rear speakers? I know 4" is stock but can you fit a 6.5" or 5.25" speaker in the rear? I don't mind not using the factory grill.

Do I Have To Cut the Door Panel?

Turns out that my cruiser doesn't have front door speakers! I have attached the following 3 pics to show the 2 speakers that are located on the bottom of the dashboard and the passenger side door to show how there isn't a place for the speaker! Is this normal? I'm guessing I have the bottom of the line basic stereo system and that's why I don't have door speakers! Should I install door speakers if I decide to upgrade the system, which means that I have to cut away at the door panels, or not?
