If I remember correctly, they secure from the back side with, and I don't know what you call them, thin metal washers you push over the pins that have radial cuts on the inner diameter so the metal flexes and grips the plastic pegs.
I'd know for sure if I could locate my old speaker grills... (I recently moved and they are in a box, somewhere.)

What he said. I think it's called a "star lock push on fastener".
 
Sometimes called push nuts. Available (of a sort) at an Ace Hardware store. Bring your grill along and don't get ones that fit too tightly or you'll break off the pins trying to remove them some day.
