What’s this? What’s this?

When I started all this, I thought it would be funny to keep all the Toyota boxes and bags and show the pile when it was done. I haven't been fully committed to it over the years, but I have kept most of the bags together. I'm not going to say the truck is done, but this crap has to stop, I need to clean the garage, so....

Gear oil for scale. This doesn't include the ones that still have parts in them because I ordered an extra screw or clip here and there.

I have a problem.

The high idle had to be corrected, so I eventually admitted I needed to pull the throttle body. Having read a thread or two where people had head issues after rebuilds due to oiling problems, I was a little paranoid. Granted any major issues should have already shown themselves, but... While I was in there with the TB removed, might as well check in on the valvetrain. Seemed appropriately oiled and new looking. Only surprise was that a couple of the spark plug tube seals had let a little oil by (I guess on the bright side, that's another sign that the head is getting plenty of lubrication.

I'm going to call this a win. Found the throttle dashpot was not allowing the throttle arm to hit the stop, leaving the throttle cracked open. Saw some people saying this is because of a weak throttle spring, but the spring felt pretty aggressive. The dashpot still works, just seemed maybe a bit stiff at the end of its travel. Seems it's NLA. Well, it has an adjuster on it, I take that to mean it can be adjusted. Backed it off until the throttle arm hit the stop, adjusted the TPS for what I hope is the last time, and tried it out. It actasilly wanted to idle at about 400 RPM until it learned the new position.

Update time. Little over 1,000 miles on the engine and transfer case rebuilds. All the parts and fluids are still where they belong, so I feel pretty good. Changed the transfer case gear oil around 600 miles and no sparklies or chunks. The idle was great for a couple days after the dashpot adjustment, then went high again. Back the adjuster screw all the way out and we're good. At least we were for a week, then it was way high again. Quite relieved the adjuster screw had just screwed itself back in (I had just backed it out with a socket and not tightened the lock nut. Back to all good after backing it out. Issue was the "soft close" dashpot for certain.

I've been mostly enjoying it and doing odds and ends. Got the center console painted and installed along with the Land Rover cup holder. Bought a cool box for tools, spares, etc. and started buying a new set of decent but not too expensive truck tools with the after Christmas gift box clearances.

Also tried to take more artsy pics...

And maybe most exciting, last night a deer hit me. My heart sank, my stomach churned, but, seems all is good. It got the wheel / tire and mud flap. No damage as far as I can see....

You can see the hair in the bead, and what I assume is a hoof and body print on the tire. Thankfully pretty small, and if it had to hit me, this was about as good as it could have gone.

Lastly, I would like to enter a submission for best Camry dent, while I am sitting of course, at the gas station.

That was just after calculating my mileage. 10.2 MPG, if anyone is wondering.

I disappeared for a while... Not much happened on the 80 while I was away. I traveled for work most of February, then my father in law passed away a couple weeks ago, so been doing other things and family stuff, plus the usual dose of laziness. The 80 has been my daily driver since November though, the battery has even died in my Mazda. I have about 1,800 miles since the transfer case went back in, and things still seem good. I have had it about an hour and a half away from home a couple times, no issues, so we're building trust. It may be about time to head to the mountains.

Things on the to-do list now...

Steering is loose / wanders on center. Almost every component is new except for the radius arms and bushings, so looking there. Putting off Delta arms until I have an alignment with everything on.
AC lines and fill. Just need to finish this, it will be hot in GA soon.
Hatch rust. Minor spot in the usual location bottom right of the window. Small spot can be seen, I know it's worse, not looking forward to it.
Bumpers ! Need to figure out at least a rear bumper. Spare is riding around in the back right now taking up way too much room.
Mount sliders. Did I mention that I picked up a set of MetalTech / OPOR sliders locally for a hell of a price ? Just need to clean them up a little and get them mounted.

Overall, things seem to be going very well (knock on nearby imitation wood). Other than the vague on center steering feel, the suspension is better than I expected. It cruises down the road far better than I thought I could expect with over 3" of lift and "35's", and it seems to be smoothing out even more as things break in. That could also be me not listening or feeling for every bump, tick, knock or whistle....

Four years (but only ~1,500 miles) after the intro post pic....

Sorry to hear of the passing of your father in law.

Well, I got a little bit done... After about 2,800 miles, I pulled it back in to the garage for the list above. Mainly I knew A/C was going to be an issue very soon, and I could not stand looking at that rusty spot any longer.

The rusty spot, as always, was a bit worse than I hoped, and it had friends that hadn't poked their heads out yet...

PXL_20230520_153107550.jpg

Ooooh... Crunchy.

PXL_20230520_153121926.jpg

That was obviously the worst spot. I struggled with how to deal with this. I briefly looked around at replacement hatches, some of what I saw were rustier, and I didn't know if I could trust the ones that didn't show any signs. Plus, when I was looking, they weren't cheap, I guess because so many of us have this issue.

So, the wire brush came out, and the bristle pads, and the grinder, and then the Ospho...

And I struggled some more. The outside of the pinch weld was the worst of it by far, the rest of the sheet metal was pitted, but not perforated. I almost got out the welder and some sheet metal, but I knew if I started cutting and welding this was going to get out of hand. And I would still need body filler. Since this is pretty thick metal, it was still very structurally sound, I couldn't move what was left. All I really needed was to fix the body pitting for aesthetics and to keep moisture from settling in there again.

So... Metal in a can it is !

PXL_20230529_204314401.jpg

Not bad...

And some epoxy primer...

PXL_20230530_232908363.jpg

Of course some variation of that process for all the spots. And while I was in there. Of course it escalated...

PXL_20230716_164830426.jpg

Which brings us almost current. I was hoping to get to the mountains, and maybe the beach, this week before school starts for the kids, but life is holding us up.

Jason

And I got a little stupid with the ashtray. I almost ordered a new one until I realized it was 95+ and the older one is NLA. So, on to cleaning up my rusty and well used one.

Came out OK, and now the front matches the rest of the dash trim.

And of course it got a new bulb.

Oh, and I strongly doubt this will ever see another cigarette (it seems to have seen all of them already), but that is "ceramic" header paint in case anyone is worried.

Jason

Next item... "AC lines and fill. Just need to finish this, it will be hot in GA soon".

All I needed to do was install the lines, everything else was already new and mounted.

So what did I do ? Well, realized I had somehow missed the opportunity to upgrade to a new tech, more efficient Nissens condenser, and got worried about the brandy new receiver / drier that had been riding around installed with maybe not the best sealing job at the missing lines.

So, along with those new lines, out with the brand new never seen refrigerant Denso condenser and in with this...
PXL_20230525_005618268.jpg

And tried the 4 Seasons receiver / drier since I had read it was a bit shorter. Not too much, but a little bit...

PXL_20230526_153922468.jpg

It held vacuum for a day, I figured that was enough, so I charged it. Thanks to some of the excellent A/C posts on here (looking at you @flintknapper ). A/C really isn't my forte, but you guys make it easy.

It hasn't left the garage yet, but I saw around 50 degrees using a meat thermometer in a vent sitting still in a hot garage, so we'll call that a win for now.

Jason

Working well I think, it was about 90 outside....

PXL_20230727_143721498.jpg

Took a long weekend trip before the girls start school next week. I still had the drivers knee trim panel off since I hadn't ever reinstalled the cruise control computer and a hand throttle. The wife was in the back and wouldn't let me turn the A/C down. Without the knee panel I had no control over the ball vent. Thankfully everything came back and I only had to pee sitting down once....

Jason

It's been a minute, how's everyone doing ?

Seems once I got this thing back together, I just stopped working on it and started driving it. Over 20K in the last two years as pretty much my daily driver. Just a couple significant changes on each end in the last few months.

This happened, doesn't really count since so much is new, but still cool...

I had a little bit of wait for the @Delta VS rear bumper while they sorted some production issues, but got it on this spring, and recently added a Slee Short Bus on the front. Both are great, the functionality of the Delta is amazing, and now that it has quarter panel tubes, it matches the front well. I thought I had some install pics, but I must have been too excited to get it on.

Here's one of the Short Bus...

And in honor of the two year anniversary, I tried to recreate the bridge pic...
