what torque spec are you using for the banjo bolt?

just went down this road myself over christmas. i just put new Toyota calipers on all four corners. with new banjo bolts and mounting bolts. no issues other than a lighter wallet. already had new-ish slee soft lines.

22 lb-ft for the banjo bolt. Three torqued easily, one wouldn't click. I stopped before "the feeling" and ran on optimism. Didn't work out. I'll see what the threads look like once I swap it.

Speaking of the heater core, I was not going to put that dash back together without a new heater core if I could avoid it. Surprisingly this was one of the bigger challenges of this project, OEM is NLA, and all the available aftermarket options seem to be generic fit and I wasn't sure I wanted to trust the quality. Old school radiator shops seem to be few and far between now,. I eventually got lucky and found one only about 40 miles away. I believe they said they are one of two shops remaining in the general Atlanta area. Their first option was to find another Toyota part that had the same core, but different tanks, and swap my tanks out. on a new OEM unit. They didn't find anything still available, so option two was a new core. I'm told (and no, I haven't verified it) that this is a USA made core from the last remaining manufacturer in the country. I believe they said in Arkansas. They apologized for that expensive brand new core looking like hell, but said it was due to the soldering, tanking and testing process. I guess I'll buy that, I've never had one done before. Also soldered up the two piece failure point, I mean joint in the pipe...

Cleaned up the heater box, painted a few parts, replaced some foam and lubed the linkages. Ready to go back in.

Where did you get it rebuilt? I find myself in the same boat.

So, a few days, weeks, months ago when i went to reinstall the hood I found surface rust in a few places i didn't appreciate. That wouldn't do of course....

Also replaced the light stalk and dimmer switch while it was all apart. You know, while I was in there...

And yes, it seems I did indeed use a Blackstone bacon press as a base for my magnetic light and a screw holder while I did this work at the kitchen bar....

My horn "plate" wasn't really worn down, but the spring had actually disintegrated...

And all back together with plenty of lube for the movey bits...

A minty fresh not broken column shroud...

And a few new seals...

Never made up my mind on hood insulation, but I suppose I'm going to default to factory. This hood is about to get bolted back on and I don't plan to do a lot of cutting and measuring of material after it is back in place.

Nice, i already replaced my broken column cover, but i had to notch an opening for the cruise control module which i never used...

Didn't they all come with cruise in the US ? How did you manage to get a non-cruise cover ?

Jason
no idea, I believe i brought one from ebay or some website a while back for cheap...no big deal as my steering column been broken for a few years, i wrapped it with blk duct tape for the time being....

Excellent work! How long would you say this job took from start to finish?

What are you using for your plastic paint / primer?
I might see if I can "match" the beige in mine, and have that help cover up some of the wear / blems

About a year.... Wasn't even planning on doing the switches when I pulled the wheel / steering column / dash, but I didn't title this "while I'm in there" for nothing. Just guessing, for my non-airbag 93 it would take me maybe an hour and a half to do it all again ? Pull steering wheel, column shroud, 4 screws hold the assembly to the column, undo the large 2 part plug under the column, remove switch assembly. DImmer switch is held to the back of the assembly with 4 more screws, the light switch stalk is held in by a captured pin. The actual hardest part for me was that there is a ball and spring detent for the end of the light switch stalk (new parts come with the stalk assembly). I had a harder time getting that back in place correctly than expected. Screwed with it for probably 20 minutes, and then it just all fell together in my hands. One of those things. Also spent a lot of time taking pictures of the wiring as you have to depin both light switches from the large connector and replace. This connector is easy to depin though, once you realize the lock is different than the rest of the connectors on the vehicle..

All SEM products. For those pieces I used Sand Free "primer" (they are ABS), bumper and trim paint, and matte clear. SEM has a full line of interior and trim paints.

Well, the hood is up on my 80, you know what that means.....

There is a hood on my 80 ! Wife and kids helped me bolt it up and align it. Still needs some work on the alignment, but it is close enough for now and they were getting tired. Wife - "Are new car hoods this heavy ?" Me - "Hon, new school busses aren't this heavy."

PXL_20220107_160158756.jpg

You can see I also decided to stick with the original transmission cooler. It's not too bad I guess.

This thing has gotten dusty just sitting in the garage all this time. Almost embarrassed to post pics with @TYM4FUN watching.

Maybe, just maybe it can be moved and cleaned up some this weekend ?

Looking great! Man, aligning the hood is a pain. I have been trying to do it solo and almost have it.

so much hate

further justifies my "splurging" on new OE calipers all around. i didn't use to value it, but now my time is better spent doing the job once with the best parts i can obtain.

on an old BMW, i once had to install THREE new in the box clutch master cylinders. they came from Worldpac, not the dealer, but they were oem ATE, IIRC.

Finally fixed my intermittent starting issue. Wasn't just a loose white wire after all...

Ooops...

And moved to the front to install my new grille. The Depo lights "fit" both early and late grille styles. They do this by having both the mounting points I believe. I'm not sure on that as I don't have a later 80, but... Anyway, the forward section that I assume is for 95+ interferes with the early grille. Most people seem to take a Dremel to the grille, but I attacked the lights instead and trimmed the mount down to match my factory lights. Seems they are pretty much designed to do this, just cut off the extra tab and sand smooth.

After (well, the above pic was after too, but I'm holding the piece I cut off in place with my cold wrinkly fingers. )

PXL_20220130_172253050.jpg

Most people seem to trim here instead...

PXL_20220130_172756040.jpg

The only down side to doing it this way is that if I were to ever try to sell this set of lights, now they don't fit later 80's. But hey, I bought them for a 93, and I'm not planning to update the grille. The T O Y O T A grille is the best grille and you all know it.

I hope you are all sitting down....

It moved ! I even drove it !

And I gave it a bath to celebrate....

Still plenty to do, but it's a vehicle again and not just garage art.

Major things I noticed...

I still have no power steering.

Strong arming the steering on an 80 is not really fun.

Something in the drivetrain is not happy. Clicking and popping and pinging under acceleration.

Brakes could stand to be bled better.

On the steering, it's a new OEM PS pump, and a rebuilt box with upgraded sector shaft. I am assuming I am still dealing with air in the system, but there is no whining or unusual noise. Working theory on the drivetrain noise is that the 270K mile original front driveshaft is not happy having one end about 4 inches higher than it has spent it's life at so far. Rear driveshaft is new. I left the front hoping to determine if I needed a double carden before ordering a new one.
