Didn't even think of moving it up. I ordered a Kaymar with spare tire bracket and tossed all the old spare tire brackets into the recycle bin. Sorry I got the Kaymar now. I should have waited and spent a few more dollars. The Kaymar has been on for 14 months, rusting on the outside corners right at the top where it makes the bend to the sides. The tire hold open is weak also. A couple of friends have found it open/locked in the driveway and thought they were doing me a favor by grabbing the 305/70/16 spare and swinging it closed bending the light 1/4 inch stainless bent hook catch. ARB on the front, really happy, lots of different colors of paint on it now from people backing into it. No bends or deflection at all no rust. I park in Boston a lot.

I finally did this to mine yesterday and yes the crank moves up a bit but if you shim the front two bolts slightly more than the rear two for the crank bar it will rotate the crank back towards where you want it. It is tight but very workable.

1) I decided to use the front and rear bars that you are considering tossing. If you keep these bars, they allow 1.5" of adjustment. So, it didn't matter if I took the winch mount any higher.
2) LandCruiserPhil hit it on the head. You can't get to the winch mouth to insert the crank rod.
Let me know if you figure out a way to use the whole 3 inches. The higher we can get it, the better.

What if you made a Y frame which pivoted from up near the front x member bracket, which dropped down, and you slide the tyre out, and slide back in, so the frame protected the spare sidewall to a degree, and you mounted the winch where the hole in the bumper is inside to lift the frame up and down, or you make it so the vehicles jack lifted the frame up with the spare in it to lock it away?
Or even mount the winch in the middle of the spare underneath, so you can wind it, so it lifts the spare in the frame, the same, but the winch fits inside the centre of the spare?

Yes, it was 1.5". I've got a full size 285 under there and the bars are not what really limit the up travel. The crossmember that the original small bar in the front is in the way. I let all of the air out just to see how much more you could stuff it and it didn't go up much more. The other thing I noticed is the fuel filler tube and vent pipes are the next thing that might rub since they are near that cross member towards the driver side. Mine isn't that close, It looks like it is topped out on the crank right now. Just thought I'd mention that if you guys figure out a way to go 2.5-3". Would hate to get it up there and rub through those pipes. FWIW I agree with 4x4 ats about putting it inside on a slee type mount or on the back bumper (Which I don't have yet) It is just too damn big to go underneath and be out of the way.

PS - I will find out tomorrow, we Rising Sun are going to run chinaman gulch near Buena Vista, CO with the FJ Cruiser trail team. Trail is moderate to difficult depending on which obstacles you bypass. I will try to post some pics later this weekend.

Here are pictures with a 6.5JX16 LC105 rim (I think it is a LC78 rim, but the offset is the same) with a 275/70R16 tire and a 6.5Jx16 LC100 rim (offset +60) with a 265/75R16 MT/R. As LC105 rims have about 2" less offset as LC100 rims, they are not of a much use on a LC100.

Well the spare tire mod seemed to work yesterday. There were many places that it would have hit but didn't. 100 did awsome. Need to find some $ in the budget for that slee bumper. Used the sh** out of the sliders. No body damage and made it over/through all of the obstacles on this trail. Can't wait for CM.
