Since we are piling on the Land Rover Disco .....

Disco1.jpeg

We "disco'ed" with this one all night a couple of years ago. As I recall we winched him about 5 times, replaced one ripped tyre, and strapped that thing for what seemed like 10 miles.

He was hopelessly off the side in an arroyo in this pic and we couldn't get a truck in front so we had to rig up a snatch block to a tree up front. Long night...

come on guys, be nice. I'm sure there are tons of LC rescues by Landrovers over the years. Both are great vehicles and both have their drawbacks.

now if you want to pick on someone, try heeps...hehe:)

True.

I totally agree with David, the LR disco III is a nice looking, riding, high cool factor truck. IF they were built better i would look at owning one.

I've told the story many times of my good friend that purchased one brand-spanking new at $48,ooo. He has signed off on almost $16,000 in warranty repair.

Your doing the right thing...there's no comparison...
Stay on the good end of the strap, Drive an 80;)

Bwahaha, this coming from the guy with portals and 38's. Dispite that, he still is correct.

Personally I would drive a heep and it break on me. Than a LR and it break in the driveway or on the way to the trail. (Not counting the fact that a repair on the heep would cost less than 1/2.

I too like the LR bodystyles etc. But when I was first looking for a rig I check the dependability ratings and LR in horrible!!!

I am still curious how much this guy paid for this 80 from car max since I checked the site for the same rig nationwide at about the same time he made the deal.

As this is my first post i would love to add to this topic. I was a HUGE Rover fanatic. I wanted one since i was 3. My neighbor had one and would go wheeling. I finally got in the market about 8 months ago and looked at tons of Disco II's I had found the right one and was waiting for the guy to come down on his price. In the mean time i found IH8MUD. After a week of 24-7 reading and hours of research(aftermarket, reliabilty and such) i stopped a guy at a toy dealership and told him if he would ever sell his MINT 80 to give me a call. A week later i bought his 1996 Fzj-80 99,000, COMPLETE service history, and OME 2.5 Med. with the CDL. 285 KO's. He was awsome and i couldn't be happier. There is NO comparison in the build and I'm a hard core british nut I love the looks of the rover. Buying the toy was the best thing i could have done. I will post pics as soon as i get my card reader.

Comparing tired irons portal conversion with 38s is a bit dramatic compared to the Disco I with maybe a 3 in lift and 31's is a bit dramatic. Give the disco a little slack:rolleyes:

?I've not seen too many LC recoveries by LR's.... and I would rather have a Jeep than LR b/c mods are cheaper and there are more of them. Also, Jeeps customer satisfaction and ownership ratings are higher than LR.

LR had the worst repeat buyer rating in the USA. In the USA, avg. car buyers flip every 3 yrs. That means LR buyers are moving on to something else after the lease is up or flooding the used car market (which is why LR's are so inexpensive on the used market). No brand loyalty says something huge= people are roped in by the image, but cant live with them.

LR's are nice but they are really small inside and are no match for the 80. I am appalled by the LR3 and new LR's... Freelander, LR3...

people complain about the FJ Cruiser but at least it has a solid axle and everything tucked up. Have you looked under a LR3?

Well, finally got word from Carmax. She's due to truck out tomorrow (4-26-06). ETA is given as 5-6-06, but sales dude says typically more like 4-5 days. Hopefully, he's right. I can't wait! :bounce:

Here's a pic from Carmax's website before they pulled it...

How much did that cost? Talk about a cruiser jones

$899 is the current rate from major cities in CA.

Getting back "off-thread":

Co-worker here's got a disco, and he's wanting to lift it some. Over $2000 to get a couple inches of lift .

Yep...I walked right past that spot. I remember the LX 470 :D

So they've had it hiding out in Roseville all this time?

Congrats!

Lifting a RR classis, DI/II or Defender is about the same money as lifting an 80.

BTW - 4 years ago I got rid of my 97 80, with 35s, 4.56s, ARBs, etc.... and got a Rover. The 80 is a great machine but I don't regret the change. As a DD/trail rig the Rover is easier to get around tight trails.

No kidding, I looked into shipping a Camry from Virginia to MA. and it was over $1200.00. That's not bad at all.

Water is the cheapest way to move something....well, pipeline is cheaper but you can't fit an 80 in most pipes!

You must have purchased one of the small # of Rovers that are great vehicles. The other 90% of people who buy them say they suck as far as dependability. :)

Honestly I wouldnt mind having a Range Rover, if they were at all dependable. I really like the new body style. But as their sheer cost of the rig + repairs. Starts to add up very quicly.

If I could guarantee that there would be no issues besides prev. maint for 4 yrs and 70K miles then I would take the plunge on a used Rover. But who am I kidding that wont happen. Thats why I look at LC's and LX's.

David D,
Looks like a very nice rig. Hope you didnt get reamed too bad. It is very hard to find nice examples close to home.

Totally agree with the reliability issue with LR. Love the truck, hate the seemingly never-ending problems.

I think I'm paying a premium for the "new" LX, but it is coming from Carmax and they don't sell anything but top notch condition vehicles. Besides, if it's not, I can return it within 5 days, no questions asked. I also get at least a 30 day warranty. Hopefully, won't need it! :D
